please give me some ideas that i can show him

it must be ca legal

thank you thomas

Awww..you're no fun ;)

Seriously, .338 is a great round but if he's on a budget and especially if he doesn't reload I'd avoid it. 7mm-08 is a great round that's often overlooked.

Is that the budget for the entire rig or just the rifle itself?

Well done...
Now don your helmet, tighten your harness...and keep your hands and feet in board at all times...
It might still be a bit bumpy...
Again, the 338 is serious player at long range...
But something like a 7mm RM will as well, and be a lot cheaper to feed...

ok now what manufacture wold you go with for the gun?

Now you're talking religion. Brace yourself, dragons are coming...

Really though there're lots of options. I'd look for something gently used from this board if I were in your/his shoes. Someone said 7mm Rem Mag and that or 300WM are about as close as you're gonna get on a budget to .338. Plus, 338 is a bell ringer for a new shooter. Hell it's a bell ringer for anybody LOL.

If 2400 is for the gun he is in the ballpark for a good build start. Seriously, though I would look at the 7mm Rem Mag, or the 7mm WSM. The ballistic coefficient of the heavy 7mm bullets is crazy good. He could start with a Remington Sendero.

Others will disagree...
But if I were him,I would try and find a 700 pss in 300wm as mentioned above...
The stock is not all that bad and it may well shoot right out of the box...needing nothing more than a trigger...
If it did not shoot,he could rebarrel in the same chambering or change to the 7 mag as I would do...
Even with rebarreling,he should have at least a grand or so left for optics...

...ok,I posted slow...lol
I see the budget is for rifle only...
That would change things up a bit...
Looks like your into a build now...

Get a Savage Model 12 LRP, cost of about 1200 bucks and comes in various calibers, if you are only shooting out to 1000 yards then a 260 Rem, or 6.5 Creedmore will suite him well. The .338 Lapua is great if your gonna shoot past 2000 yards in my high opinion. So now you spent the 1200 bucks you can buy a Vortex PST for 800 that's 2000 bucks the rest can go torwards ammo and practice.. I saved him money.

I have two friends with the same rifle and they shoot great outta the box, and come with the HS Precision Stock. They also sell .300 win mags too.

Is this his first rifle? His first long range rig? Has he taken any marksmanship training?

Honestly if he is new to rifles in general a hard kicking rifle chambered in 5 dollar bills is going to be seriously counter productive. Not only will it be expensive to get trigger time, he may develop bad habits such as flinching unless he has already developed good recoil management skills.

My recommendation would be something in the 6mm or 6.5mm class, such as the 243 winchester or 260 remington. Both are more than capable rounds for long range shooting, but will be user friendly enough to encourage longer shooting sessions and good technique.

I would then take the money saved from going all out on 338 LM ammo and roll that into a basic precision rifle course which will introduce him to long range shooting in a controlled environment with professional coaches.
