Gunsmithing Prefit, ready to instal and shoot barrel for FN 70?

Hi,

So I just put a down payment on an FN PBR action (same as the SPR/Win 70 CRF actions). I also have an AIAT which I love and love the fact I can switch barrels very easily.

With the FN, I know that a quick lock doesn’t exist. But does anyone make or have the ability to produce a prefit barrel for these. I understand there will need to be an extractor cut for my specific action, didn’t know if I could send in the action and have the smith take the measurements.

Pac-Nor says they have prefits on their site that are short chambered but I am looking for a ready to install, run a go/no go gauge, and shoot.

Looking for the ability to change a barrel with a vice/barrel nut set up.

Not looking to hang a barrel on this until sometime next year, just want to know.

The extractor cut is the issue. It would take one hell of a magic wand to know in advance where the threads will index once torqued up. That directly influences the XTR cut position.

What I could offer instead is a barrel fitted and delivery ready in a week provided I have base components sitting in front of me. If you burn through barrels or just like to swap stuff around, the better alternative might be to just buy a gaggle of barrels and have them fitted all at once. Then its just a function of R/R at home.

FWIW: Short chambering is a bit of a double edge sword. I get the intention and the implied conveinience; Just chase it with a tap handle and reamer. However things like neck diameter, freebore, and throat geometry become my biggest question. What was it chambered with to start?

I'm sure some have had great luck, but if it were really that simple, I would think it would be offered by all the barrel companies and we (gun plumbers) would be out of a job.

I do not plan on buring through barrels on this action, maybe a barrel every three years unless it becomes my primary over my AIAT.

So I assume you’re meaning that your turn around time WITH IN HAND components is fastish?

At one time, I advertised a 96 hour rotation on B/A work. The pace has picked up over the years so were now on about a 10 day schedule. IF I have receiver, barrel blank, and the reamer on the shelf, we'll have it done at that frame rate. Brakes, can adapters, lugs, etc... all play into this as well where applicable.

That's barrel fitted, engraved, test fired, spin polished, and shipped. Things like fluting, coating, etc... take more time.

Our online status tracker (kinda like the pizza tracker from Dominos) provides updates as the jobs shuttle through the shop.

Just know this:

Kalli does all shipping/receiving single handedly. When guns come in (actions, guns, cans, blah blah) and they have to be logged in, she does that as well. Those get done first every day just so we don't get cross eyed with BATF stuff should the hounds ever show up for an audit. Because of this, a guy might get a notification that he's done and moving into shipping.

To put it into perspective. We had 8 rifles arrive today along with around 20+ Mausingfield actions. It gives an idea of what she deals with single handedly.

It might take an extra day or two before she can actually ship it though becuase of the acquisition/disposition requirements. Its just the nature of being a small company. Regardless, we try like hell to get stuff back to you guys as quick as we can. The in/out is improving as we continue to refine this stuff, but it's not perfect. (fingers crossed on someday...)

Only send to LRI if you like to shoot small groups.
Like around .4 regularly and .5 unless I screw up with hornady ammo. Thats a barreled action dropped in an old HS and torqued to 65 ft lbs.

Im not that skilled either.
A rifle that is rediculously consistent helps. Then you can tell what you are doing wrong (for me it is follow-through and breathing control) and know its not an inconsistent rifle.
