Advanced Marksmanship Pressure to hold the rifle

Ok guys,
This might seem like an elementary question but I need to confirm what I'm doing.

I need to know how hard to are you holiding your rifle and how hard are you supporting the stock into your shoulder with your support hand?

The reason I'm asking is when I check for NPOA i relax my whole body and if in good position I've found myself not really supporting the rifle when I pull the trigger, I stay too relaxed if that makes sense, which is affecting my recoil control.

Re: Pressure to hold the rifle

I find that holding the stock firmly into the shoulder, with a firm grip on the rifle, works best for me; especially when recoil is significant. The key, as with all things related to accuracy, is to be consistent. Free recoil is a BR technique that I have never had any luck at trying with positional shooting. The trigger finger should not touch the stock except at the palm, and the trigger at the other end.

Re: Pressure to hold the rifle

It depends on the rifle I'm shooting. If it's a light-weight hunting rifle, I give a very firm hold with my cheek and pull the rifle into my shoulder tight. This helps in controling the recoil more.
If it's a heavy tactical rifle, I hold it gentle in the right hand, but firm in the shoulder. Like stated, do everything the same each time.

Re: Pressure to hold the rifle

I hold the rifle firmly to my shoulder with a firm grip (not tense) grip on the stock. IME it is important that you maintain that position throughout the recoil (follow through). If you relax when the trigger breaks, you'll throw that shot.
