I was using H4350 44grs CCI BR2 primers Remmington brass. The was signs of pressure. Had 1 blown primer. Tried Win primers today at 44.3 grs of H4350 with no pressure signs. Would primers make a that much of a difference in pressure and speed?

Some info here:

Speed and pressure for the WLR and BR2 was pretty close with Varget and RL-17. The WLR was slightly higher. I wasn't testing them to max. though.

Are you certain nothing else changed in your load? It might be worth repeating your testing, or at least "probing" with a few rounds just to confirm. A chrono would be a valuable tool to use while doing this...

Re: Pressure with different primers

5 questions:

1) What was your cartridge overall length?

2) What was cartridge length without bullet?

3) Were the cases clean of any grease when fired?

4) How many times fired are your cases?

5) What cartridge were you using h4350 in? Might not be the best powder for the job.

There are others to answer before you conclude it's the primers that are responsible.

Col 2.820
Case trim 2.025
New brass
I work the brass the same every time. I usually let the brass tumble overrnight. I use forster dies. I chrono the ammmo tonight using a CED. They Avg 2886 SDs was 10.6 with 15 rounds. I normally use a 20 shots. I bump my load to 44.5 grs. They shot even better.
I have been shooting H4831 at 48.3 grs BR2 primers at 2809fps.Thought I would try something different. This maybe the ticket.
The last time the BR2s I load I had pressure signs with primers. When I blew a primer. I had to take the bolt apart. I was using 44.3 grs of H4350

Re: Pressure with different primers

I read an article once on checking the SDs and Vel. through a chron. The minimum shots through it should be 20 to 50 shots. Every time I have tested ammo through the chrono now. I use 20 shots. This gives a better avg. of what the ammo is going to do.
