Price Check - How much in your opinion? (Parts list & Gunsmith)

I know prices vary and gunsmith fees vary, but I was wondering what ya'lls opinion would be on price for the following:

Parts are all new for a .308
- Rem 700 action (matte black finish) with standard hinged floor plate and trigger
- Hart #5 contour barrel (stainless)
- HS Precision thumbhole sporter stock
- Gun smith to put together and blue print the action
- Gunsmith is local to me and has all the parts in stock (was going to be a project for himself)

If the 250 covers truing and chambering/installing the barrel, that gunsmith charges way too little for me to trust. My opinion of course.

I'd guess you're looking at another $250-300 for chamber/install.

Action $400 - 450
Blueprinting $200 - 250
Barrel $315
Chamber/install $250 - 300
Stock $360

~$1525 - 1675

Rails/rings/optics/bipod etc.

OP, you can't expect to pay $250-$350 to square the action and lap the lugs and another $250-$350 to chamber and install the barrel from most reputable smiths. You didn't mention any coating which can go from $75 to parkererize to $300 to cerakote everything.

I would just like to say make sure this is what you want. A lot of smiths will talk you into parts somebody ordered and changed their mind and make you think you're getting a deal. Make sure you are getting a deal. Also their is no reason to pay full retail for parts and the high end of what labor goes for to have a no name smith perform work when a reputable one will do it for the same or less. There's a lot of great gunsmiths here on the hide some of which are more affordable and some of which don't have long lead times. I would at least make a couple phone calls.

I understand where you are coming from. I try to always do my homework. This smith has already built one rifle for me (custom .300WM) and I have been very happy with it.

I was also looking for something a little lighter than the other rifle he put together for me for carrying deer hunting and fun shooting. I had pretty much made up my mind on a .308 and I am a big fan of the thumbhole stocks. So I think the parts he has would be pretty much what I had in mind.

He had thrown out a rough estimate of $1,800 which seems pretty close to what you all have mentioned thus far. I may see if at that price if he would put in surgeon DBM for only the additional cost of the actual hardware (That make sense?). Maybe throw in a 1pc 20 MOA base to the deal.

- Bead Blasting $45 (if not Cerakote)

I'd figure cost of the parts + $1000 - $1200 for the smith depending on what work you are wanting done. I'd find a good smith to put it all together, wouldn't bargain shop in that department.

Check out the Long Rifles Inc group but thread. You may or may not want to have Chad and Company build your rifle, but there you will find a list of services and costs. I believe those prices are near or at the bottom of what you'd expect to pay.

If you want to skip reading that thread it seems like about $650 gets: true, hang the barrel, cerakote, bolt knob, recoil lug and 8-40 scope base work.

I agree with you, just didn't want to scare him. I dropped 5K on my Scalpel when I ordered it from Surgeon and it made my butt pucker.
