Yep just seeing what prices are on a 4'x8' sheet of ar500 around your local areas? I have looked up prices on the internet so I know those, but it seems always more pricey than my local metal suppliers are. My local supplier can only get me a sheet of 8'x20'. I think its 20' but either way anything over 10 feet is too big for me right now.

I found that it was cheaper to buy precut targets from a couple of hide vendors and eBay than to mess with cutting from sheet. And I have a plasma cutter!! Still cheaper to get from vendors.
Plus moving a sheet is work!!!

moving the sheet is easy we have fork lifts and cranes. we have cnc water jet and cnc plazma table.

See if you can find some buddies who will go in on it with you. 3-4 years ago myself and 2 others went in on a sheet, and the metal vendor cut it for us on his robotic water table.
I laid out the cuts and he programmed it. We each got 1 full size USPSA "metric" 2 33% "metric" (also known as IPSC). verious size rectangles and squares from 12×12 to 4x4. I believe we got 16 targets each. For about $300 + $25 cut charge each. 3/8" thick

I would probably just use our plazma cause its faster and doesnt need to be that perfect.
It started out as my buddies idea. We each got about 6ft. So i got graph paper and laid my cuts out. Went with squares to maximize targets. Other 2 buddies had lay outs with circles, would have had a lot of waste. When they saw my layout they both just adopted my lay out. My buddies dealt with all the logistics.

My company orders a lot of AR500, I'm always ordering targets and such, can get pretty competitive pricing. I'd have it shipped to you straight from the mill. Or if you want it cut into targets, send me some drawings or measurements and I can have it cut at the mill.
Where are you located? Are there any target makers in your “area”?
Can a supplier let you know who in your area gets regular deliveries?

I am located in punxsutawney, pa and my two suppliers have never even bought the stuff.
I just got the following prices from a mill that I order from frequently:
4'x8' plate, AR500 steel
1/4" $500
3/8" $581
1/2" $775
That doesn't include freight. To give you an idea what it might cost I can typically truck 500-1000 lbs for $200-300 anywhere in the country.

Group Buy? I could see this going somewhere. Hell, sheets of 1/2" cut up to your desired size and shipped for substantially less than what's out there? Yeah, this could take off like a rocket.
Except that our existing vendors can beat a group-buy price every day of the week.... without the hassle.... Because the work in volume.
This is about half the targets that Busenhalter-6 got me last Christmas off eBay.... for about $300. She is so cheap, that when she spends a nickel, Jefferson screams.... so hard to argue with the targets.
These along with a bunch of mil targets are all scattered around Schloss Nitrocellulose. I did weld on some posts... and make some stands.
But I could not have bought the consumables for a cutting torch for what this whole pile cost me.
Just 'sayin.

I am the cheapest sumbitch on the planet. I do everything myself. Unless it's just stupid to do it myself. Then I buy it and don't look back.
AR500 targets... are not worth doing yourself, from what my research determined. Esp. when there are 'Hide vendors who are really good at this stuff.
That said, one gets a lot of satisfaction from DIY. And then cost does not matter. So... if it butters your bagel... damn, go for it!
But if you are just trying to save money... take it from someone who has BTDT, done the research and just hit "Buy Now" and sent the Paypal.

Grade 50 plate is running about $0.58 per lb right now. Therefore, I can buy a 3/8” thick 4x8 sheet (delivered) for less than $285.
I’d wager AR500 is probably closer to $0.90 per lb just because it is sort of an oddball item. I can check tomorrow and let you know if it is important.

$581 for a sheet of 3/8” plate puts it at $1.18 per lb.....not including delivery. That’s pretty crazy. Not saying the price is wrong, just goes to show how much steel has gone up this year.

Time is the most valuable thing you have. It is also the one thing that can not be replaced. Sirhr is correct. I have done it, but it was not my bright idea. I went along because hey why not.

Just heard back from my plate guy.
For me, one sheet of .375” x 48” x 96” AR500 is $570 ($1.16 per LB) delivered to my shop. I’m sure if I bought more (or larger) sheets I could save on the delivery charges and pull the price per LB down somewhat. As you can imagine, the more you buy the better price you can get.....up to a point. This is buying from a service center, so buying direct from a mill would save even more money, but I have no idea what a minimum order is from a mill for plate.....I’m sure it’s pretty large.
We never buy 48” x 96” because our plate machine handles 120” x 240” up to 3.5” thick. We gobble 3/8” and 1/2” plate like it’s going out of style, so a 48” x 96” plate is not the most economical way to buy.
All this being said, I agree with the guys who posted above. Unless you have the proper equipment to handle and process the plate, AND are wanting to cut some kind of oddball/custom targets that no one makes (or a massive amount of targets), you’d be crazy not to simply buy from one of the Hide vendors that do this stuff day in and day out.

i bought one of the dueling trees from owl creek fabrication, works great. No way can a guy make his own for what u can buy premade for.
I used to be a steel buyer for a rock crushing company. One of the few things I remember is that steel weighs 10.21 pounds per square foot of 1/4”... so if we are talking 1/2” it would be 20.42 x 8 x 20 = 3,267.2 pounds
