I know what primer pocket cleaning is all about but why would some one want to ream a primer pocket ? to me reaming the primer pocket means to make it bigger, if you make it bigger your primer will fall out or is their something i am missing ?

Re: primer pocket cleaning and reaming

Im guessing you are talking about uniforming, which is cutting out the pocket to the correct depth and shape, not touching the walls.

Unless you are talking about removing military crimps which involves basically chamfering the pocket.

i seen this preping kit for brass it came with one handle 2 neck brushes, 2 primer pocket cleaners and two primer pocket reamers

I have been looking for a cleaner something to clean the carbon off the bottom of the primer pocket and square it up that would be the primer pocket cleaner, so what is the long shanked reamer for ? on the cleaner its like a 4 flute endmill with an adjustable stop so the cleaner cannot dig down any deeper

Crimped in primers. You ream or swage.

I clean every 3 cycles.

If it's target grade brass, I uniform the primer pockets and deburr the flash holes.

Mine is made by Lyman and the stop isn't supposed to be adjustable. Inside the primer pocket there is a small rounded corner on the outer edge where the vertical and horizontal surfaces transition. This tool cuts that rounded corner out so that it is square instead of rounded. That, and it provides a small degree of truing up the bottom of the primer pocket. It cuts nowhere else if used correctly. You can clean with it for a while until the carbon dulls the cutting edges. Forget about trying to sharpen the edges as the depth is preset by the factory with the stop. Unless you are a wizard with measuring devices it's best to just use as they direct.

For cleaning I use the brush that screws into a tool handle. You twist it a few times and it only brushes the bottom surface of the pocket and leaves the sides alone.

Nice kit. The reams are used to cut out crimps in primer pockets. The plastic handle looks comfortable, too. My cutter have knurled metal, not so comfortable. I'm suprised it doesn't have a flash hole trimmer.

Re: primer pocket cleaning and reaming

Hand tools like that are OK for some uses IMO, but frankly all those operations -- Primer pocket uniforming, chamfering, deburring, neck brushing -- show better results when performed under power. I would look at buying a uniformer like the link to Krogsl provided, or a Sinclair, and perform these operations with a power screwdriver or a small cordless drill.

I bought a couple of cheap cordless screwdrivers from Amazon, (Black and Decker 2.4 volt) and keep a chamfer side tool in one, and the deburr tool in another, uniform primer pockets with a small cordless drill. If I brush necks, I use a bronze caliber size brush chucked up in the drill.

good luck
