Primers for 6.5x47

Chris, LongShotRifles, emailed me this am saying he received my Krieger barrel for my Surgeon actioned 6.5x47.

Still waiting on dies. Best bud is prepping the brass and I'm accumulating bullets.

I have a brick of Fed 205Match primers and a brick of CCI 400 primers.

Hope to start w/ H4350 and Varget as I have numerous 8 lb jugs of both.

1. Does the Surgeon 591 action have any known problems with smallish sized firing pins or large firing pin holes which could create primer problems? If so, now is time to find out so I can have Chris fix it while it's there, at his shop.

2. Will the primers I have potentially create any pressure problems due to the higher operating pressures associated with the round?

3. I like to do lots of load workup in the Utah winter months so by barrel stays and goes cooler quicker. Any issues with the small primers and the cold temps? I read CCI450's may solve both issues of cold temps and high pressures.

4. Should I start looking for a different primer?

Thanks,

Alan

Re: Primers for 6.5x47

I have used Wolf SMR and CCI #41 in two 6.5 x 47 Lapuas. One a Surgeon 591 and the other a M-700.
The Wolfs gave slightly higher velocity, both gave good SD and ES numbers. I ran them up to high pressures to find the top during load development. The M-700 cratered slightly more than the Surgeon action at high pressure but neither enough to cause problems. Neither had cratering issues at normal pressures. The M-700 has a faster twist barrel than the Surgeon.

I would try the Primers you have on hand first however. CCI 450s would be my third choice. You may run out of case capacity with H 4350 if you are using bullets above 120 gr.

This is an easy round to load for.

Hope this helps.

Good shooting!

Re: Primers for 6.5x47

I was concerned with this also, as my smith says he was seeing some cratering with the test loads he tried in my 6x47. He stated that I should look to the Wolf's, or the CCI 450/BR4s. He stated that the other CCI's and my Federal Gold Medals would almost surely crater as I neared the high pressure end. At that point I asked hime to bush the firing pin. I'd sure like to be able to use the Federals, as I have 5000 of them in the "Man's room".

Have the firing pin bushed and away with your troubles.

I use 40.6 and 41 of H4350 w 130 VLD's and I wouldn't change a thing
