Rifle is a Weatherby Mark V 338-378 Accumark with a Leupold Mark 4 6.5-20x50 ER/T Front Focal with M1 Turrets! During bore sight using my Leupold magnetic bore sight devise i have to input 34 clicks up to bring my reticles crosshair down to level. Is there a way to get my 34 clicks back? turret is 1/4 inch per click! the adjustment thru the bore sight uses reverse inputs due to mirror in the unit so i inputed 34 click up to take the reticle down to center the cross hair. As mentioned would a shim work to get my 34 clicks back and where would i use it? front or rear mount? Scope to bore axis is close to 2 inches! Scope has 70 MOA adjustment but i do not want to loose almost 9MOA before 100 yd sight in? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Have you shot it yet to confirm that you're really losing that?
The Burris Zee Rings have shims built in. You can actually use them to get a few extra clicks in the right direction.

No i have not shot it yet to see if i actually lost 34 clicks but it took me 34 clicks up to bring reticle down to zero during bore sight? I have shims but just wondering if i needed to use them before shooting the rifle since i had to use so many clicks to get the rifle to zero? I was under the impression that the optic was zeroed when i purchased it and after using 34 clicks to bore sight it i feel i will be without 34 clicks and could possibly need those 34 clicks at some time?

What base do you have currently?
Write down what your zero is, and then turn the knobs from lock to lock so you can see how much elevation you have up and down, and how much windage you have left and right. Tell us your results, and it will be easier to make a suggestion.

I use Warne 2 piece Maxima Steel bases and i set up on my Tiptons gun vise and have levels on all 4 corners that are plumb as it's sitting on my counter top. I also use a Wheelers Level in the action and one smaller one setting on top of the elevation turret, the one that sets in the action i have issues with but do my best with getting it plumb with the top level then i put my Leupold Bore sighter on the muzzle and i use a 2 foot level and measure from center of my optic to the O on the bore sight to align it together! My rings are Warne tacticals in medium and i did lap the rings 100%, then i painted them with a cold blue pin and torqued them, bottoms first then tops to 25 in lbs and then my 1/4 inch nut front and back to 65 inch lbs! It takes me 34 clicks up on the elevation turret to lower the reticle to zero in the bore sight reticle. You say to run the turrets to their stops in both directions and what does this do? I feel the optic was centered when i got it from the box but being a newbie help me here with why i need to run it lock to lock and write down the clicks in each direction? am i measuring for it being centered? If i am i can promise you i will be 34 clicks off in the up measurement! So i need to take out the 34 clicks up and then run the optic from full up to full down measuring each and writing them down then do the windage the same? Hey if this is what is needed i will do it in a heart beat! i thought i killed my topic by putting it in the wrong thread or by not shooting the rifle first? I am willing to do anything to get this bad boy to the range for brake in! It's not going to be used for a lot of long range target shooting but on occasion it will, i primarily will use it on Elk here in NM. Nightforce makes a 20 MOA base for the Weatherby V.Which will will fix the problem.IMO shimming isn't the best way to deal with your problem,especially on a high recoiling rifle.Your asking for problems from the get go.

The shims i have are steel shims and i think only 1 shim will get my back base up high enough to fix my issue but all of this is new to me and i wanta ask questions and fix my alignment before doing any adjustments on the range. My rifle came with the accu-brake on it so felt recoil is in the 300 WM range? I am taking blood thinners so it's use the brake or look like i had the hell beat out of me! I turn funny colors with recoil, black, purple, yellow and it's not an issue of taking recoil i take it fine but my shoulder looks like hell! had a double stints installed in my heart a few years back so i could keep breathing! Guys i really appreciate the help i am an older USAF retired C130 Crew Chief so excuse my ignorance! But i am originally from Arkansas and not too bad of a shot, once i get warmed up!

After you have rechecked your boresighter, and checked your optical center, actually go out to fire your rifle, and get it zeroed @ 100 yds.
If you have actually lost 9 MOA of up travel, there are ways to get it back. But shoot the rifle first....

Bob thanks for the info as i have no issue buying what works to get my optic as close to zero as possible before a range trip, really wanta use the rings and bases i have since i am only 8.75 moa from zero and i will try one shim under back base and bore sight it and go shoot it. I understand how important it is to make sure my optic has been centered and to just not take it for granted and i will do the center test mentioned earlier! I will also look at your link to the Leupold Bore sighter and see if i am doing something wrong! highly possible but think i am doing it properly! you guys are keeping me from pulling out the last couple of hairs i have left, and this help is greatly appreciated and it will take me some time to do all this but as soon as i get them done i will be back! Hopefully that 1 shim will give me back tha 8.75 moa and i have been digging in the FAQ Optics thread a bunch and i am sure once i find zero or close to it i will be content, but i just hate loosing 8.75 moa? i know have a plan and will work on fixing it, Everyone has given me great info and Happy Holidays to you all ! It's a one piece base picatinny rail.Works fine with the rings your using.In a nutshell the 20 MOA downward slope of the base will enable more usable elevation in your scope for shooting longer ranges without running out of adjustment.

I have the Leupold magnetic bore sighter. I use it to record the settings of each rifle after they are zeroed. Some are as high as 11 moa above the center line after zeroing, very few are exactly at the zero line.
When you use it to bore sight before shooting it is just to get you close. You need to go shoot it and see where you really are before stressing over anything.

I checked out those rings on NF website and they even come in 2 piece versions but i wanta give these i have a chance first and i will check bore sight method closely and scope alignment as Jason & others have mentioned in first post and pull my head out for a breath like he tried to get me to do at the start. You guys are pointing me in the rite direction and i feel as mentioned a range trip is in the near future because bore sighter is to actually get you close! i have had Gunsmiths bore sight for me and not even be on paper at 25 yds so i will do a range trip and try at 25 yds just to see where i am at. I normally start with a 1/2 sheet of PC paper and draw a cross on it and start at 25 yds and then take it to 100 yds if i am on paper and close to center! Thanks for the great info and i will relax and use some of the great info to check my Mark 4 before the range trip! My Swarovski bore sighted without any issues on my 300 Weatherby mag the same day i did my 338-378 and the rings were not 30mm rings but same manufacturer only 1 inch rings! My Z5 Swarovski beat my Mark 4 Leupold in a low light test by a bunch the other evening. i could have shot like 15 minutes longer with my Swarovski than my Leupold Mark 4, glad i did not buy the second Mark 4 because i will use the 300 Weatherby for more hunting than i will the 338-378! Once again guys you rock when it comes to getting great info posted and it's greatly appreciated! Later Terry

Boresighters are a waste of money (yes I HAD one).
Pull the bolt, point the bore at the target, crank turrets to put reticle on target, and shoot it. I've never been more than 5" off at 100 yards.
