Hey guys, new to the forum. I am wanting to rebarrel my Mega Maten to a 6.5CM. I really wanted to go with a Proof carbon barrel, since the Maten is already a pig, to help save weight. But I've heard that the Proof barrels have a sloppy fit in the receivers, so I am considering JP. I would be doing the install myself; I am no gunsmith by any means so is this something a rookie would be fine with attempting? Or would the JP be a safer bet?

I haven't seen any direct comparisons of the Proof vs JP, but I think they are pretty even matched? Any input is helpful. Thanks

Mega has their 6.5cm barrels coming out soon. I'm confused by your question. Do you want to save weight? Get the Proof. A sloppy fit does not make sense because the barrel extension is machined steel and not carbon. Is your Maten a hunting rifle? if not, how much does weight matter? Does accuracy matter? I'm sure both are very accurate. I like the matching bolt with the barrel that comes with the JP and Mega. If weight matters get the Proof, if you want value, get the Mega. JP seems to be the heaviest of the 3. I am not a fan of their medium contour(.936 at the block, and .875 passed the block). The Mega CM barrel is your best bet. IMHO

Just picked up my custom Bartlein 22" 6.5cm +2 gas barrel from Josh over at PVA this weekend. He headspaced it to my JP HP bolt and used a JP barrel extension. Cant wait to get out and shoot it tomorrow. Heated up the front of my MEGA upper receiver and the new barrel slipped right in. Once cooled its a rock solid fit. Couldnt be happier. If this new barrel shoots anything like my last custom Bartlein that had rifle length gas I will by very happy. Especially with the +2 gas being easier on my brass.

If I was someone building a 6.5cm today and wasnt having a smith spin me up a barrel then I would 100% get a JP with the matching HP bolt. Cant beat that deal and they shoot.

I keep a tight watch for Proof Barrel reviews. I had been eyeing one of their Barrels for quite some time. The reviews I have seen are mixed on the Proof. Most of them are good but I have also read the sloppy fit problem and just straight won't shoot as good as other comparable options.

I also have a tight watch on JP reviews and have never read one that was negative.

I would suggest the JP unless you want to give us another Proof review from your perspective and gamble on accuracy for weight savings. The best Proof reviews were ones where Proof barreled the ARs or worked directly with the company that does as a partner. Those reviews have been good.

Just my $.02.

I have a Proof barrel. Shoots FMJs only ok but my hand loads with 75 grn Amaxes and Benchmark are turning out less than 1/2 inch groups. I did throw a 32x scope on it to do that and it has a CMC trigger which helps.
