Seems I love heard here and there to keep you body square to the rifle so the stock is hitting your body square and not being pushed to one side. But in order to line your eye up in the scope I really dont see how this is possible. So what are they trying to convey? I see adjustable butt pads on some stocks how can this help?

If you have a bipod or bag, you can line up square. Legs spread in a wide V,feet laying on the instep, toes out. Offhand gripping a rear bag under the stock or grip.

If you have to reach forward to support the forearm, the shoulders naturally have cast to them. In that case I bring up my right leg (right handed shooter). It's just more comfortable.

from what I have been told...

draw an imaginary line from the bore down through the stock and down your spine...it should be one line. put the butt stock on your shoulder in a way that it lines up with your nipple and just lay your head down on the stock. dont tilt your head to one side...

this is how it was explained to me and has GREATLY improved my shooting...

You know you are doing it right when the rifle recoils straight in to you and does not flop over one way or the other. That is, you should finish recoil on the same target, not 2 targets over. (I often shoot prone in a high power type range format with numbered lanes).

Thanks. I need to work on that. Ive had consistency issues in the past that I suspect have to do with bad form.

I need to build up the cheek rest and practice staying on the rifle for loading the next round. But the whole idea of being straight behind seems off. Ill have to practice.

I'm not sure exactly where you are having difficulty with it, but I can say that some configurations and body types will not allow for proper eye relief while squarely behind the rifle. For example, only a pencil neck can square up behind an M40A1, IMO, due to the pitiful range of eye relief adjustment available. Also, trying to get straight behind a rifle while slung up is an excercise in contortion, though your shoulders will not be square, but some win matches that way (David Tubb comes to mind).
