Alright,

I am sure everyone has experienced it on one side or the other. Not that it bothers me, because I have mis-pronounced a lot of words in my day but I was wondering what other words out there either in the firearms industry or at least related to the english language that get butchered on the daily. So I thought I would ask you guys (and gals), for a list of your favorite pet peeve mis-pronunciations.

I'll start.

Oregon - (Or-e-GONE) it didn't go anywhere, it's pronounced Or-eh-gun.
Zion - (Zi-ON), pronounced Zi-uh-n
Colorado- (Col-o-Rahd-o), it's pronounced Col-o-rad-o

Noveske - (Nov-a-sek-ee), (Nov-es-kee) I think it's pronounced Nov-esk? I fucked the dog, it is pronounced Nov-es-kee.
Geissele - (Jee-zell), proper pronunciation is Guys-lee. (just learned that one last week).

Anyways I have a few others but let's see what you can come up with.

Re: Proper pronunciations?

Do you mean the proper pronunciation ob Pacific words, or the general butchering of the English language as spoke up hur in Merka?

If you mean the latter, then I'll start...

Kin you axe yo' awnt to watch da chillem while dey daddy go to woik at Walmarks? Ifn he don't show up for his employment, dey gonna classify him as a felum and throw his ass back in jail.

You might want to reconsider your pronunciation of Noveske after this video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqMjqf1wuGQ

See I told you I mis-pronounce words all the time! But I did put the disclaimer "I think"

Re: Proper pronunciations?

I've only heard Noveske as: "No-veh-ski" as in the video above.

And who is fucking up Colorado and Zion. I can maybe see the "rad/rod" issue in Colorado, but Zion?

One more for the list:

Koch as in Heckler & Koch: In the proper American translation, it sounds like "coke"...the beverage. The authentic German pronunciation sounds like "cock" but with the throat clearing "ch" as with Chanukah instead of the hard "k" sound. "cock" and "kotch" are incorrect in either style

Yea ebonics is a whole different animal, I guess I am looking for words that people think are pronounced correctly but in fact are not. Like my nephew calls it Juan-mart, it's freaking funny to get him worked up about it when I tell him its WAL-mart.

Re: Proper pronunciations?

unrepentant, Damn, you may take the Foul out of my handle and take over. Not likely.!!!
Two things get me going, no make that three but one is more that one word.
1. similar and simular. Grates on my nerves like scratching a black board.
@. Cavalry and Calvary. One place they tacked up Christ, the other an outfit that sent many to meet Christ. May have been horses or helicopters, take your pick.
3. Point-blank, used by many, especially the news media, to mean very close, as in the shooter was right on them at close range. however, I think it is an old artillery term meant to mean the gun does not need to be elevated to hit the target, this one really pisses me off.
Depending on the size of the target and the firearm used, with a .22 Long rifle round and a man sized target and the bullet dropping 4 inches at a hundred yards, that is not on top of you nor close and you hit it.
If you use something like a 22/250 the range gets longer.
I would rather they say , powder burned or stippled by unburned powder as to close range, just not point-blank.
My rant is over, Regards, FM

Re: Proper pronunciations?

REALLY not intended as a political but Ive always wondered about the pronounciation of John 'Boehner'. to me it would be as in 'Bone-er', or Bo-ner' but they seem to pronounce it 'Bey-ner". How do you get Bey outta Boeh?

Yea, I dont get it either. There was a kid on the football team in HS, who's name was also Boehner, pronounced Bone-er.

I had an ENGLISH teacher who use to butcher Colorado and Zion, and she never shut the hell up about her summer vacation 'out west' to Colo-rahd-o, and then going to Zi-ON, damn eastern tenderfoot son of a bitch.

It's only pronounced Boner if your a poor common fellow, if you are a well to do politician type, then its Bayner.

And yes, Zion is butchered far too often. All these dipshits who watched the Matrix come to southern Utah, and say Zeye-awwwwn. It's just Zion people.

Re: Proper pronunciations?

Or car-ra-mal. Sometimes my southern drawl comes out by mistake.

I can't say "ask." I had a anatomy teacher listen to me say it and she says the way my tongue clicks the roof of my mouth makes "ask" sound like "axe."

I just avoid the word all together by saying "I have a question for you" or "Question...If you..."

Re: Proper pronunciations?

So is it.....

"Waulk the daoug"

or

"Wak da daag."

Where I grew up "dog' was an 9 letter word....

"Get that damndaoug outta my flowers"
"That damndaoug is eatup with ticks." etc

Re: Proper pronunciations?

hmmm... so there's no 'ask' but "axe" is acceptable...

ask
task
flask
cask(et)
mask(ing tape)

in that "dialect"; a novel concept. And those are only the words that come to mind as quickly as I can type. I'd love to be there...

"I'mo axe d'unnertaker he gwan burry my mama in a caxet wif her flax o' Taaka."

Say what??

S'no wonder it's "Walmarks"...

On an aside, nothin' grinds me more than 'Calvary'. The calvary rescued John Twang just in time...

and there also "ofTen". argh.

Re: Proper pronunciations?

That Calvary thing gets me going.
I was in the 1st. Cavalry Div. during the Sunshine War Games in Sunny Southeast Asia in 69-70.
We had a First Shirt that was really on to that.
If he heard someone say Calvary that unlucky soul was destined to burn shit for a few days or longer until he could pronounce it right.
It did not matter to SFC Poisson if you had a lisp or were from someplace that Calvary was acceptable, you burned shit until you could say it right.
I don't think he was alone on this.
I burned my share of shit but it was not because I could not pronounce Cavalry.
Most times the detail was taken over by dumb shits marched down to the latrine by Top, so I guess my fellow squad member and I did benefit from those who had trouble speaking English.
