Anyone have data on actual average target distance in PRS matches?

Wasn’t sure if this had been captured by match directors and made available.
Was just wanting to compare different matches across the country.

Any info is appreciated.

Just figured it up, the last match I shot (southeast) averaged 426

Most average about 400 yards as noted above.

With the number of events you can figure between 400 and 600 yards as a safe bet

I have to say that is lower than I expected.

I realize this depends on the match and it's available range but I would be interested in the percentage of 200 shots in categories i.e. 200-400, 400-600, 600-800, 1000+ etc. I plan to shoot slash volunteer some matches this year in OK for the first time and planned on gathering some of this info.

They give you match booklets you can average the ranges from any booklet out there,

Take an event booklet and post the ranges

Oh I don’t doubt the difficulty. I have been involved in shooting sports (shotgun, pistol) my entire life and it’s never as easy as the pros make it look on TV(YouTube).

I guess where my expectation of longer distances came from was all the talk of 1000 yard this and 1500 yard that in gun rags and even on here. Which I’m sure is still relevant on some stages in a match.

To your point though, yes, 400-600 yards is nothing to scoff at when you are standing and resting your rifle on a swinging tire lol.

I would agree that stages are kinda in tiers. 400-600, 700-900, 1000-1200.

Most of the ranges I have shot are set up like that.

Many, if not most matches do have 1000-1200 yard stages, but you asked for average distance. That includes the up close tough stages. Remember that PRS stand for Precision Rifle Series. It's about precise shooting at longer distances under tight time constraints.

It really depends what range the match is held on. I've been to match's where the avg was probably 800ish, and I've been to match's where almost all the shots were under 600.

both...the distance can fool you though...when i shot at CORE in '16, i think they had 2 (maybe 3 stages) that had targets from 700-800 yds...most everything was inside 600, but times were tight and you had to move fast, made for a nice challenge

rifles only usually has 2 stages off the tower that go out to 1k, but most of the others are 100-600 yds...the 100-600 stuff can be harder than the 1k because of time/positions/movement/multiple movers, and jacob likes to take away support bags on some stages, there is very little actual prone...he likes doing 1 off the side of a rocking whiskey barrel @ 3/4" dots at 100 yds, no bags or anything allowed and the average score is usually about 1-2 out of 10

Heatstroke in OK is a match with a longer target distance, but like how we shot there for the finale this past year, the times are more generous and its a decent amount of prone

Lone Survivor has a good mix of prone/positional, has a handful of stages that go out to 1200 or so

Last year Alabama had a handful of stages with targets in the 800-1200 range, the majority were 300-600 tho

the distance alone doesnt indicate much about the match from what ive seen...the target size/position/time can make things interesting...for example at Rifles Only we shot @ a 10" plate @ 1k yds with 7-12mph winds...Alabama was a full size ipsc @ 1100 and 1200 and very light winds, i never had to hold more than edge of plate

We have a monthly club match at a quarry. Just because of the setup, only a dozen shots or so are inside of 600. The majority are 700-1k, and another dozen out to 1250. You're shooting across valleys and along hills, and the targets are set up in tall brush. It's very hard to read the wind or spot a miss. Winning scores are often 50%. Compare that with the MidWest Club Series Finale that was held on a sheltered BR range that only went to 800yds. Half the shots were within 500yds, and you never held off the plate. The winner shot well over 90%. Both matches we're fun and challenging, but for different reasons. Like I said earlier, it really just depends on the facilities the match is held at.

Great info guys. Keep it coming. I have one request on responses. Try to mention at the very least what region you shoot in if not the name of the match. Just to give people an idea of what to expect in their area.

I just think this is good info in general but really for new shooters getting into the sport. Not that I think it is easy by any means but on the face of it shooting 400-600 yards on average seems less daunting than >1000. Makes PRS or even NRL a little more approachable in my opinion.

If I can remember, I’ll get my match book from Woodys this past weekend and give you actual match numbers. Right now I’m about worn out and have to get up and drive 600 miles tomorrow.

Ok, here are the actual numbers for Woodys PRS match this past weekend. Total rounds weee 170 if you shot it clean. There were only 2 extra shots allowed on 2 stages, so if you used them you shot a total of 174. So think about that for Precision rifle. Almost Every shot was for a point or a 0. It was a tough match, but it was fun and challenging. Wind was switchy on Sunday, and my hat is off to the guys who had good scores. There was only one target below 200 yds, a prairie dog, at 197, so I just added it to the 200 yarders. Also, most of the yardage’s in a bracket were on the high side of the scale. For example most shots in the 3-400 range were 350 to 395 or so. We shot out of a van, off rooftops, tanktraps, barrels, out of windows, off platforms, barricades, out of a schoolbus ( I really stunk that one up. Now I need to go buy a school bus to practice on!) and we shot some from prone. Good variety to keep it interesting and challenging. ROs were great! Thanks! Here are the yardage’s.
