I'll feel free to talk on the phone all the time when I'm driving or text back and forth using my phone & car's fancy hands free voice control.
It keeps me more alert than anything else and also helps me not want to go all mad max on the stupid folks on the road that can't simply go forward in a straight line.

That being said, I get rather upset when I see folks holding their phones up in front of their faces and texting while driving, they always seem surprised that I'm honking my horn at them and maybe making hand signs suggesting they pull over and pleasure themselves.

Life is a bit different when you have to drive through horrific traffic a couple hours each day.

But from my 10,000+ hours of driving in traffic experience, sheer stupidity, spacing out & risk taking are the most deadly and dangerous things, (or being the last car or two at the end of the line of stopped cars).

I drive a 60k lbs boom truck myself for my job, and we have an absolute zero phone use rule with cameras in every company vehicle to enforce it. Even with that, it seems weekly someone is getting into trouble with it.

I'm a big fan of the dash screen hands free features (Apple CarPlay or Android Auto), but they themselves can also become a distraction if you allow it. The biggest key is self discipline and play it smart, same as getting off the road when tired, not double fisting a burger or trying to suck down coffee and a smoke at the same time.

I'll add to use/enforce for the kids the "Do not disturb while driving" feature on their phones. I use it myself, it auto replies that I'm driving and will get their message later. You can loosen the restrictions like adding certain numbers to the exempt list or have it not activate if your phone is connected to the stereo.

Earlier today I was driving on I-80 when a car passed me pretty quick. No biggie. I had the cruise set at 82 so I’m guessing close to 90. About a mile later I come “flying” up on her. I immediately start looking for something that must be wrong. Is there a cop, an accident...why is she going so slow? She was going well under 70 when I caught and passed her. I looked over and there she was, head down, looking at her phone. I honked and gave her the phone down motion. She flipped me off and passed me again a short time later.

Actively trying to use a deadly weapon to specifically shoot at people, making a conscious effort to do so is VASTLY different than adding another task to your current actions that may lead you to have less focus on a primary task which could possibly contribute to an accident. Very large amounts of people text while driving and MOST of them do not have an accident, however a smaller percentage do. Now of that smaller percentage while it's popular to blame "texting" for it, they may just simply be stupid, careless and idiotic to begin with.

This is a perfect example of why freedom is dying out in this country. NOBODY it seems wants actual freedom, EVERYBODY it seems wants the "government" to get some people with guns to "follow orders" and go impose their own will and concerns on others & make ever harsher laws and government intrusion because "if it just saves one life"... or "think about the children" or other such BS.

Here is a true example of how these laws everybody is Soooo into actually get applied.
Places like NY or CA have the police looking for people who are stopped at the curb or are at a dead stop in a traffic jam that hasn't moved for half an hour or more, looking for people to give a ticket for revenue collection to.

On distracted driving though, if they want to get through to over-entitled fuckwads who don't care about other's safety on the roads, they need to start with mandatory jail time rather than piddly fines. Someone who spent as much for their iPhone as I did for my MacBook really doesn't care about a $250 ticket. Start with minimum 30 days jail time for causing an accident with their face in a phone, and go up from there for severity of the damage. Make them pay for their incarceration while they're at it.

I may be a millennial, but I feel like a fucking boomer when it comes to social media. I just don't get it! I mean I understand that as humans when have tribal instincts and are social by nature and all, but how did this obsession with social media become such a big thing so fast?! Social media has been around long before Facebook and Twitter, but over that past few years it has ballooned into some nuclear grade autistic shit! I personally can't stand looking at my phones because there's always bullshit waiting for me there. Maybe it's just morbid curiosity, but anytime I see someone using their phone while driving, I always want to know what is so fucking important that they're putting their's and everyone else's lives at risk.
