How much energy does the 7mmRM have compared to a 30-06 out to 1,000 yards.

I would assume the 30-06 would win because of the higher grain bullets it can accomodate. Am I wrong?

When I rebarrel my 7mmRM, I can't deside whether I should convert to 30-06 or not.

Thanks,

A .30-06 shooting a 200gr Accubond will give you 842 ft/lbs at 1000 yards. The 7mmRM shooting a 162gr A-max will get you there with 962 ft/lbs. The 7mm has higher BC bullets so it retains more energy despite being a smaller diameter.

Ok, let me ask another question, how much energy is needed to make a humane shot on a deer at that distance.

Sorry for the questions, I've been watching "Best of the West" on the Outdoor Channel, and they had a guy kill an elk at 890 yards with a 7mmRM and a 180 grain Berger VLD bullet.

One last thing, how much does a .308 have at that distance?

Thanks,

I dont have the exact data your asking for, however I would say for what you are asking, the 7mm Rem is suitable for the job. I dont think the money spent to change to a 30-06 would give a noticeable difference. Here is a link, check out the BC of the 160 gr Accubond which will be lethal on Elk. I currently own 2 7mm RM loading 140's in one and 160's in the other.

Re: Q's about the energy or a 30-06 and 7mmRM

7mm RM with 180 Bergers at 2950 fps has 1153 ft lbs at 1000 yards.

30-06 with 208 Amaxes at 2750 fps has 1050 ft lbs.

But there's a lot more to putting a bullet into an animals vital zone at 1000 yards than the amount of energy is has left.

Re: Q's about the energy or a 30-06 and 7mmRM

Yes, I have considered the 300WM, but something is pulling me away..... what is the average barrel life for a 300WM, energy?

Yes, I have no intentions of shooting at an animal at 1,000, I'm just asking so I can know more about my rifle's capabilities BEFORE I start sinking money into it.

Again, what is the acerage barrel life and energy at 1,000 yards with a 300WM?

Thanks,

Re: Q's about the energy or a 30-06 and 7mmRM

I'm at 1700+ rounds on my TRG 42 in 300WM, and it still shoots less than 1/2 MOA. Most 300WM shooters I know will set their barrel back around 1300-1500 rounds. Some will replace them. I would say around 1500-2000 rounds for a 300WM.
Also, a fast 7mm bullet with a good BC would be a good choice. The 7 Mag is an awesome caliber.

It's a Chevy/Ford/Dodge question really. They both are great calibers with high BC bullets. The 300 uses heavier pills to do it. So, if energy was the deciding factor, I'd lean 300WM. A 208 A-max or 210 VLD will hit very hard way out past what most shoters can shoot.

You'll have to get a new bolt as well. The case head is a different size. It would be easy if you kept a magnum bolt face, like for a 300WM or your 7mm Rem Mag.

Re: Q's about the energy or a 30-06 and 7mmRM

Yea, I know, I'll just get one from PT&G the way I want it, it's only ~$150. In my opinion, the output for the new bolt will outweigh the cost of the expensive factory 300WM's, or the 7mmRM's, 30-06 is much cheaper.

Right now I don't currently reload so it's only factory for me, hopefully next year I can have enough funds for a starter kit for .30 cal.
