Do you happen to know the checkering lpi on a pre-war M70 Sporter stock? I finally found a stock for my barreled action but it looks like it's been refinished a few times and the checkering is in bad shape.
I'm about to purchase some stuff from Brownells for refinishing and I wanted to buy the correct checkering tool while I'm at it. I guess I could buy the checkering guage but then I'd have to wait to measure, then do another order for tools and pay more shipping.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Re: Question for Pre-War Winchester Experts

yeah, i tried that but it keeps coming up at 21 lpi. Is there such a thing, because no one seems to sell it. I can only find 20 or 22 lpi tools.

Maybe I'm measuring wrong. Am I supposed to count the lands or grooves?

It may have been an odd number...If you are only "pointing up" the checkering, i.e., the pattern and grooves are clearly visible but blunt, they sell a "single point" checkering tool that will do that nicely. Use a magnifying glass and good light. Lands or groove should be the same. Be aware that they sell different angle cutters...you want to be able to cut to depth and match the grooves and tips of the diamonds. They also sell a longer "joining" cutter that is useful on the straighter lines in order to keep from running off due to the wood grain.

Re: Question for Pre-War Winchester Experts

Thanks for the info. Checkering is very new to me and the selection of tools gave me a headache.

I will be just "pointing up" the checkering. I'm going to go look for those tools that you recommended right now.
