Rifle Scopes Question for the scope Gurus

I was one of the forty ones to obtain one of the newly released SCAR 20S. I don’t really have any experience in heavy caliber weapons this is a 7.62 x 51mm this is a little out of my wheel house. I am a retired Navy Chief Submarines, I am a weapons guy but like any good Chief knows when to turn to the real expert Shooters for a little help. Well having said all that, this weapon did not come with a scope. I am looking at a digital, but this heavyweight is not friendly to scopes, I don’t hunt I really don’t even go to the range that much. So I know I would expect y’all to go with an optics’s based but I really just want to be able to hit something at between 300/600 yards at a glance. Please share your opinions I am open to discussions. Have a budget? Any features you want/dont want?

Since you're not trying to run and gun I'm figuring that optics with 1-2.5x power on the low end won't be too interesting to you.

I'd look into things like:

Nightforce F1 3.5-15
Nightforce ATACR 4-16
Leupold Mk5 3.6-18
Leupold Mk4 6.5-20 M5A2 (the 34mm version)
S&B 3-20 Ultra Short

Your budget will help, because to be honest, the optic to shoot a 308 to 600 yards with leaves you with basically every scope worth a shit as an option.

Yes I have 3, I was looking at a digital with the shooting solutions computer but I don’t want to waste my money either I know how to use a scope. Do you have any options about the digital AMD

Not sure many here/anyone here uses a digital scope. I think they've made leaps and bounds since their inception, but they haven't come far enough yet to become something any of use or look at as far as a viable optic.

The closest thing right now I believe is the Revic scope which is a bit of a hybrid with glass lenses and onboard sensors.

If you are starting out, I would really start with a solid optic and learn how your ballistics are calculated, read wind and how it all comes together instead of throwing money at a digital optic that is still in its infancy.

I just suggested the digital because I am getting old and lazy!!! I know I should get a glass front focus preferably. I know I saw a doc on the Barret 50 and they were showing a solution computer optics I was just amazed that they were so cheap now. It’s for home defense I just want to be able to reach out there if I need to. There’s really no place around here that’s got 1000yrd range around here to be able to dial in that kind of yardage. I am on OpticsPlanet I will give your choices a look if you were going to pick one which one would you pick

As German said budget is going to have a huge bearing on what eveyone suggests. If your budget is $1000 then there is no point is suggesting you get a $3000 optic.

Yea I was just on OpticsPlanet checking on the optics he was suggesting the prices and they ran from 2 to 3 grand, so if I want to get out 5 or 600 yards I need to pony up some cash ? lol ?

Optics planet is usually slightly under retail. Depending on what optic you want to go with, looking on the EE here, checking with sponsor vendors (they have SH pricing if you ask) as well as upping your google game will really cut serious money off of scope prices.

Just from what I listed, you can get the NF F1 and the Leupold M5A2 for around 1500$.

But you really need to figure what you want first; you also mentioned self/home defense which doesn’t really mix well with wanting to shoot 600 yards. This can be fixed by adding something like an offset Aimpoint T1 or whatever or may have you then looking at something like a 1x low power optic with 8 or so on the top end to still make hits at 600x. For reference my KAC M110K1 has a Leupold Mk6 3-18 with a Aimpoint T1 on the tube.

You should look at Revic or old school S&B 3-20 ultra short, either in a spuhr mount. You know you actually have to shoot the rifle to learn the system,not just own it your safe! maybe even take a class. No disrespect intended. I'm really surprised the german has taken the time to type more than,

I think something in the 3-15 power range or so would be a good fit for this rifle. If you are really concerned about your rifle chewing up optics (not something I've experienced, but I am aware of the reputation) then I think a high end Vortex would be a good choice because their warranty is pretty unbeatable. Specifically the Gen 2 Razor 3-18 X 50 in a canted Spuhr mount.

Plus it will add yet another shade of FDE to your SCAR. Vortex has a steep military discount, but I am not sure if it applies to retirees; I got my Gen 1 Razor HD through it last year as a coming home from deployment gift to myself

Honestly a 308 doesn’t have that much recoil especially in the platform you have. With a good quality muzzle brake it will be a pretty soft shooter actually. In your position I would look at the higher end Vortex optics. Vortex offers 40% off their retail prices to LE, Mil and vets. Several of the vendors here will honor that discount. If you want info on the vendors send me a PM and I will give you the info. Either a Gen2 Razor, a Gen1 Razor or an AMG if you want to try the keep the rifle lighter. The Razors are really nice optics but are by no means light weight. The AMG however is a little more manageable. To tell the truth a Vortex Viper PST is probably going to do everything you want and you could use the extra savings to buy ammo or go to a class to really learn how to use the scope. A class would really be a good investment. For starters you are going to have a lot of fun spending time with other individules with a passion for shooting. This will also give you the proper foundation to start from. I’m former military and had some pretty extensive marksmanship training at my unit. That being said I didn’t really understand long range shooting until I attended a 3 day class. By the end of the 3 days I was able to successfully make 1300yard hits with my first or second shot. After building that foundation it was a matter of getting out as much as I could and learning to read the wind. Anytime I see it is going to be windy which hasn’t been that often on the east coast I make a point to go to the range. Having a bad ass rifle is great but if you can’t hit anything with it what’s the point right.

.308s in general do not eat optics. However, due to the mass of the large bolt carrier on a SCAR they have been known to damage a few of the lower end optics. This becomes an issue because that same large bolt carrier that reduces the recoil will actually slam home pretty hard after the recoil impulse. This forward momentum is what has damaged the cheaper optics in the past. Your high end optics have been built to handle recoil in both directions, the lower end optics will sometimes have a problem with this.

OP, thank you for your service! I agree with Thunder on the 3-15's for 600 yards and under, if you're trying to stay around the $1k price point the Burris XTR II is a pretty bulletproof design but struggles a little optically compared to some others. The Vortex PST II 3-15x44 is the sweet spot for sub $1k optics and has great glass, a decent reticle and decent turrets but comes with the best warranty in the business IMO. If you're willing to put the cash into your scope after paying so much for the SCAR, the Kahles K318i is the best Ultra Short I've experienced yet, really short design, great reticle and superb glass. Another thought would be the new Bushnell DMR II Pro 3.5-21x50 and make sure you look at the "Pro" version which has better glass than the standard version, it is a proven design and pretty bullet proof and would look nice atop your SCAR. All the scopes above can be had for military/veteran discounts and yes, most of the companies offer discounts to veterans, not just active duty (the exceptions would be Leupold and Nightforce who only offer discounts to active duty except in special situations).
