So I made a 16.5in 6.5 Creedmoor for a suppressed hunting rig. I live in Alabama so I wont ever get a real long shot opportunity. Love the rifle, Lone Peak Fuzion TI action, Carbonsix barrel, Jewel Trigger, put together by Tooter Meredith, about the most talented gunsmith on the planet if you ask me. I'm only getting 2490 FPS from the 140gr ELD Match Hornady rounds. That's lower than my 16in .308 shooting Hornady Black at 2560 FPS. Something doesn't seem right here, and I know I am prone to user error, so here I am asking a stupid question. Most of what I've googled up shows I should be getting closer to 2700 from this length barrel, why is mine shooting so slowly? Is this a possible barrel defect, or did I read some fake news about the 6.5CM?

Appreciate any advice, to include a good smack to the back of the head.

Nope. Assuming you're talking factory loads, Hornady lists it as 2710 from a 24 in. bbl. I get 2590 from a 20 in. Tikka, and that's in warm weather. I usually get around 2775 from a 26 in. Krieger. I don't think your numbers are very far off.

By the way, I'm in Alabama and just heard of Meredith Rifles a couple of weeks ago. Where are they located?

Nevermind - I found them, waaaay up in Athens.

ive shot tons of 140 amax/eld factory ammo from 24" barrels and all of them run between 2725-2800...no way id ever expect to be 2700 from a 16.5"

if you dont have many rounds on the barrel yet its possible it will speed up a tad somewhere between 50-150 rounds...usually in the neighborhood of 50-100 fps

2700fps from a 16.5" barrel? Nope. Different powders work differently in different barrel lengths. The factory powder is closer to H4350 burn rate and will give faster velocity in longer barrels. If you loaded for that rifle then the faster .308 use powders like Varget would work better and give you a little more velocity. Otherwise I wouldn't worry about it. You made a short barrel for a reason and just use it for that and don't worry about getting more velocity.
