This might be a silly question but I have been eyeballing this ammo for plinking purposes for quite a while now. I was looking into getting the Cupronickel .308 ammo which is 75% copper and 25% nickel made by Dynamit Noble from the early 1990's.

My questions are: Since the jacket is made up of 3/4 copper will I still be able to clean the barrel with a copper solvent and still be able to remove the nickel as well. And do I have to worry about any sort of metal bonding to the barrel such as with moly coated bullets. If so what sort of solvent will remove the nickel as well as the copper. Or do I have to get one to treat the copper and one to treat the nickel.

The barrel is a rock creek crome moly 20inch.

I have known people that have used it in the past without worries in reguards to it shooting decent in semi autos. But I havent seen anything on how it cleans and if it leaves any deposits on the barrel that can effect accuracy when jumping up to hand loads or using match quality ammunition.

Any input, suggestions or help will be much appreciated!

thanks D sulenski.

There has been a good deal of argument over if the DAG ammo will wear out barrels faster or not.

However there should be no issue in cleaning it up.

I bought 1500 rounds of it and most of it now sits in a ammo can as SHTF ammo.

The ammo is harder on the barrel and the nickel is supposed to be hard to remove from the barrel.

If you run a search of the Hide (use the Google search engine), there were a couple of threads on the Cupronickel bullets loaded in the DAG surplus ammo that hit the market a while back.

As for your specific questions, it is my understanding that you need chemicals to deal with BOTH copper fouling and nickel fouling to ensure that you remove it all. If the nickel is not removed properly, my understanding is that it reacts badly with the steel of the barrel leading to "lumpy" deposits/rust spots in the bore. Again, if you run a search, you should turn up a good deal of additional info on the specific concerns with the DAG/Cupronickel ammo.

Re: questions about shooting dynamit noble with AR10

found a brand called Whipe-Out Accelerator that says that it can bust up cupro-nickel but I have never heard of the brand or heard of anyone using it.

As far as the interweb search I wasnt able to find much info other then that back in the old days cupro nickel was a common bullet coating. It caused rust pitting in the barrel when the nickel was removed in older firearms from WWI and WWII era. I havent found anything really that has helped clue me in one way or another. Other then it wasnt the best ammo 100 years ago. No info can be given on the subject that is within the last 10 years that I could find in my searching.

I am interested because I see the ammo all over the internet and for cheap. Its accurate enough for me to consider it over other mil surp brands but not if it will cost me more in the long run with having to buy a new barrel.

I would like to call up the barrel manufactuer but seeing that they are a smaller outfit I wouldnt hope for too much from them on the matter. I figured someone somewhere on this website would have some good insight.

That may explain what happened to me. I have a LMT MWS, and I have shot about 150 rounds of DAG through it. However the last time I fired it in the FL humidity I found rust in the flash hider, bore and chamber. I am also getting a sort of tar like residue from the DAG ammo.

I would suggest paying a little more and finding something something cleaner and reloadable.

That sucks to hear!

Is there any way to safely treat the barrel and have you noticed a loss in accuracy?

My understanding so far is that you have to remove the nickle and copper buildup after each shooting to reduce the risk of damaging the barrel. Also havent come across anything that states that this ammo is safe to use in what types of barrels I.E. stainless steel, chrome, chrome moly etc. I have yet to come across anyone who has shot this ammo for any great lenth of time with any sort of result.

So hopefully someone out there has some input otherwise I dont think I will invest in this ammo as it sounds like it does more harm then good.
