Okay so I was originally planning on buying a GAP .260 or .308. However my cousin called and said he would be willing to sell me a completely trued R700 all on a aftermarket stock (I think its a Mcmillan A5 or A4). Now my only issue is that it is a .243 caliber. However then I remembered, is a .243 simply a necked down .308 and a .260 is the same? So can I send it to a reputable Gunsmith and have a 308 barrel placed on it? Or a .260, whatever works.

Whenever I google this all replies I find involve sayings such as "Redo the Chamber" or other things that make no sence to me .

Re: Quick Q on .243

The bolt face is the same with a .243, .308, and .260, so you just need a new tube on it and you're good to go.

Redoing the chamber won't work as they're different diameter bullets, 6mm, 6.5mm, and 7.62mm.

Hope that answers your question.

Re: Quick Q on .243

Perfect! That is great because I reeeeaaally did not want a .243, and since it is an ABS carbon fiber I should be able to get very good resail out of it to cover a new Hart or krieger barrel+have it put on and what not.

Thank you!

Re: Quick Q on .243

Why? The .243 is an excellent long range caliber. Do you know what twist the barrel is on the rifle?

Re: Quick Q on .243

Well I am unsure if I plan to keep the .243, and I do know that it is an amazing caliber, however I have heard bad things about the barrel life, usualy being near 1700 rounds. Correct me if I am wrong because if so I will keep it as a .243. As for the Twist rate I will call my cousin later in the morning to find it out. Once I find it out I will inform you all.

But please, if I have been misinformed as to the barrel life please tell me. I cannot afford to pay 300 dollars on dies and reloading gear just to need to pay another 500ish to rebarrel every 1700ish rounds. I would rather change it to a .260 or a .308.

You've "heard" incorrectly. 2500-3000 rounds, especially if properly cared for, is indeed very likely.

Re: Quick Q on .243

O, well in that case I will more than likely keep the barrel and caliber. Now if you do not mind, can anyone who is informed on this matter tell me what twist rate is recomended to shoot either the 115 DTAC or the 105 Berger VLD/105 Lapua/107 SMK.

I am assuming the last three are grouped into the same category?

Re: Quick Q on .243

I would only recommend the 1:7.5 twist for the 115s. Some will say that you can shoot them with a 1:8 however you will find just as many who cannot shoot the 115s with a 1:8. Why chance it? Get a 1:7.5

If you're going to shoot the 243-unless inhibited by current twist rate-you are wasting your time shooting any other bullet than the 115.

Re: Quick Q on .243

Thank you for the Information Mike, and I do realise that the 115 DTAC is THE bullet to shoot. However I fear the barrel my cousin has placed on it might not be the needed twist. This does not concern me however due to the fact that the barrel already on it I plan to waste getting accustomed to the rifle and how it shoots, so I class it as a learner/beater barrel. Once shot out, or once I decide to rebarrel I will get one in the proper twist and use the other (if not shot out) as a hunting barrel.

Re: Quick Q on .243

How about the nosler 105's? I have been reading that the bc on them is extremely high. Not quite as high as the dtac but you could probably get them a little faster to make up for it.

Re: Quick Q on .243

Now these 105 Nosler and A-Max, do they still need a 1-8 twist? or is it more in the 1-8.5 or 1-9 range? My cousin is coming out later today to shoot and I will ask him to bring the rifle in question, however it will be a good 8 hours before I can get back online with a for sure number.

Re: Quick Q on .243

The faster the twist the better with regards to the heavier bullets. You're going to have to try loading some and see how they shoot, that will be the best way to get an answer rather than us trying to speculate. Go buy some 105 A-Max's and try and develop a load.

Re: Quick Q on .243

243 = headshot machine and cheap banging..send us a pic of that rig bro. Also I will top BoltTrippers offer on the plastic barrel at 55.00 hell I will throw you a ten spot for shipping!

Re: Quick Q on .243

haha! Well, I do not plan on any headshots with it but cheep shooting is a easy plus!!

As for the pictures my mom woke up and decided on a "family day" so the shooting will be delayed untill further notice =(.

And as for the plastic barrel I might let my cousin keep it for his use or resale and save a few bucks, if it is for sale I will sell it on this website!

Have a good day everybody!.
