I was Blessed to be one of the Camera Land October 2020 Sirui give away winners. According to the e-mail I got from Doug, the prize I received was a wonderful Sirui ET-1004 aluminum tripod with Sirui TY-70A Fluid Video Head. A quick call to Joel at Camera Land to confirm a shipping address, and all was set! I wasn't asked to cover tax or shipping. NOTHING! That's my kinda deal! BTW, if you need something and call Camera Land, ask for Joel. He is a very nice and fun guy to talk to. I'm sure Doug is as well, but he was busy doing Doug stuff when I called. BTW, Doug and Joel are brothers. Awesome guys indeed!
Within a week a Big Brown Truck Man placed a box on my porch. Woohoo! It has arrived!
Inside I found a very nicely and professionally boxed Sirui tripod kit. It was preassembled and came in a very nice carry case. I could feel the quality of the build and components as I unfolded the legs and got the fluid head aligned. The tripod is not meant for heavy duty optics or rugged use, but the quality is there like some of the mega tripods and fluid heads I have fondled. I have a Vortex Pro GT tripod with the fluid head for my brute of a Nikon Fieldscope 85 EDG. The lighter Sirui build quality was on par or exceeded that of the Vortex.
The head uses an Arca-Swiss style mount and base plate. This is the first time I have used the Arca system, and I like it. I like it better than the base plate interface on the Vortex head. I also like the way the Sirui fluid head pans and tilts better than the Vortex, especially when using the front heavy Nikon EDG. There are two small bubble levels built into the head to top things off.
Anyway, I really like this tripod and fluid head. For hauling a small to medium size spotting scope or a pair of big objective binoculars to the range, it would be hard to beat. My old star gazer 11x80 binoculars have a new perch. It would also be perfect to double as a photographic and / or video tripod. However, I do not think it would be appropriate to put a rifle saddle mount on this tripod setup and expect stellar ELR hits.
Oh yeah. One more thing: The feet have RETRACTABLE SPIKES! How cool is that?! Just in case your range is on a glacier or iceberg.......
Thanks to Camera Land and Sirui for the great gift! It is very much appreciated!
