Straight pull bolt actions are more popular in Europe. Never heard of anyone trying to convert a M700. Give it a try and tell us how it worked.

This is quite the challenge, I too suffer from wrist fatigue, making the lifting of the bolt very uncomfortable. I set out to solve the problem copying the design of the Blazer straight pull bolt rifles, The first step is most crucial. Now that my straight pull bolt was almost functional, I had to fill the notch in the stock, to keep the bolt from falling down and creating a major hangup. <span style="font-style: italic">there is nothing more frustrating than a straight pull bolt that you have to yank on several times before it moves, BTW, my homemade uber-tacticool breaching bolt knob makes a hell of an edged weapon!</span>
Now for the ball detent, the bolt would fall out every time you pull the trigger if it didn't have a ball detent genius! So, you drill a hole in the side or bottom of the action, and tap it 1/4npt. You can steal the spring out of those cheap ass pens from the cust. service counter at Wally mart, you can mash a couple of those into one of those bronzy colored pipe plugs, and then use like a BB, or BBB, or a skittle or something like that to go in the hole. Tighten to 65 inch pounds. Of course you need to make a mating hole in the side or bottom of your bolt body to recieve the BB/skittle, I did this simply by hitting a punch through the hole, <span style="font-style: italic">I wish I had a set of those transfer punches they have at Harbor Freight</span> As luck would have it, My punch hit right in the gash....er, flute, on my bolt, so you can imagine the shit samwhich that was trying to make a round hole in a raspy groove big enough for a skittle. Test for function. <span style="font-style: italic">you may need to mash more of them little bastard springs in there to get the right amount of friction to keep the bolt in when firing</span>
If you choose to use the sweeter of the detent balls, I would suggest getting some out of a quarter candy machine in some old stinky office in an industrial park, they have some of the hardest detent balls out there.
You'll need to open up the throat a bit in the barrel, the reduced friction will send the jagged DNA stained bolt right into your damn face when regular pressures are applied, I would suggest cutting the throat to within .68moa from the muzzle. That will keep that nasty bullet from sealing with the bore until its right at the crown, <span style="font-weight: bold">THEE</span> most accurate part of the barrel. <span style="font-style: italic"> it also gives you a quick second for bolt knob dodging if your skittle is out of spec</span>
Its a work in process, I will keep you updated as I get closer to a perfected product. I've had several calls from Remington inquiring about my design, I think I'll leave em hanging till its done.

If you want a straight pull bolt I think you should just get one. It is either impossible or extremely impractical to do it with a 700.

I am about finished removing the lugs. But I am a little nervous to start the flutes. Do you have like a diagram or something I can use, so I don't mess it up too bad?

A 700 is NOT DESIGNED to be a straight pull.

See, on the surface you'd think that to be true.
But, i actually see it as a good thing. Shooting is fun, relaxing, and a good way of getting kids out of the house and into a friendly, and safe shooting environment. If the hide is the first place they look, then it's sure as hell better than one of their mates older brothers whos claim to fame is the 'uber-cool-AK-sniper' he bought after he saw it on TV
Video Games cop alot of backlash in regards to violence relating to the use of firearms and other weapons. the best thing that can happen is for kids who play these games is for them to go out and join other shooters, and learn that not all guns are designed or built with death in mind by some two-bit hack in an allotment shed who thinks taping a trio of AR-15's together is a 'game changer', and that they can enjoy real guns, and learn to shoot both safely and efficiently.

While it isn't practical to attempt to convert a 700 to straight pull, you might want to look into an AR-10 type platform that has been converted to manual operation and set up with a side charging handle. However, I believe you will find that the effort required to unlock these type of actions is actually more difficult than working a twin lug bolt action, especially one with a tactical knob that increases the leverage and decreases the effort. I have an AR-10, Schmidt-Rubin 1911 Rifle, and several 700's. If you have a tight round in the chamber of the AR-10 that you need to extract manually, it's a lot more difficult than the same situation in a 700. The straight pull Schmidt-Rubin, while a very well made design, doesn't feel any easier or faster to work than the 700. I like the 700 better. There are very good reasons why the 90° and 60° lift bolt actions have been much more popular than the straight pull designs.

I think so, especially when you have a difficult to extract case. However,if you have a phyical condition that makes the lifting motion more difficult than the straight pull motion, look into the converted AR-10 type rifles. You would get the accuracy and modularity of the platform with manual operation. They are basically AR-10's with the gas system removed and a side charging handle installed.

Yep that is why there are so many of them, they only build what they can sell.
