Re: Rabbit with CCI Velocitor at 75 yds

I'm a shameless Velocitor fan. Using these rounds, I have killed about 60 groundhogs at ranges from 5 to 300+ yards with single hits through the body. I can remember very few that have crawled off and none that crawled more than a couple steps after a solid chest hit from these rounds. I have administered multiple shots to the chest when I was not sure they were anchored, but I doubt they have ever really been necessary.

Of the few dozen I've killed at ranges beyond 100 yards, only one time did the bullet fail to exit. In that instance (100 yard shot), after passing through the length of a large groundhog's body, it came to rest under the skin of the off-side and had expanded to .35", IIRC. Even the kill I made at 360 paces the other day was a complete pass though and nearly instant death.

I believe these are the best hunting round available for the .22 LR due to their excellent bullet construction (Speer Gold-Dot, basically, from what the company says), relatively good BC (.132, IIRC), good quality control, and hyper-velocity. Retained energy at range is better than anything else, in my opinion. They are also relatively flat-shooting for short range work (<100 yards), and handle the wind OK for longer shots, considering it is a .22 LR.

Highly recommend to anyone wanting the best hunting round available for the .22 LR.

How do they compare to WW Powerpoints? That was my go to hunting bullet after leaving CCI Mini Mags.

WW PPs killed far better than anything else IME. So is this Velocitor that much better?

WW PP's advertise a 40 grain hollow point launched at a MV of 1280 for 146 ft./lbs energy @ the muzzle and 88 ft. lbs @ 100 yards.

CCI Velocitor claims 1440 fps with same weight bullet for 188 ft/ lbs @ muzzle and retains 107 ft/lbs @ 100 yards.

Those are just numbers though. I think the Velocitor kills groundhog sized game a tad better after it slows down a little at around the 100 yard mark, but that's a completely unscientific observation.

The WW PP's of the 40 grain variety were based on the same philosophy: biggest hollow point bullet going as fast as practical. They have killed a lot of stuff...I just think the Velocitors are a solid step up in practical performance.

Wow, that's a good bump up in speed w/a 40.

Too bad they are priced as they are, guess rsvd for edible small game a box or two might pay for themselves. Thanks.
