Hi folks, I'm in the process of building a .22lr trainer and have a question on scope mounting. The rifle is a base model Savage MKII. I purchased a nice little(short) AR style scope to put on it. I have milled Picatinny rail stock from aluminum to fabricate a custom rail but I'd like to conserve the rail stock and use the shortest length I can, as the forward end of the rail would be wasted under the scope. Would there be any problem, losing zero, etc., by drilling and tapping another set of holes at the rear of the action and mounting the rail there as opposed to mounting a full length rail. There seems to be sufficient material at the rear of the action to sustain the rail and scope but just wanted some opinions. What do y'all think.
