Here are some pics of my rifle.

208's (x20) over Ramshot Magnum (66, 66.5, 67, 67.5) @ 3.47 OAL
240's (x20) over Ramshot Magnum (58.5, 59, 59.5, 60) @ 3.30 OAL
220's (x20) over Ramshot Magnum (62.5, 63, 63.5, 64) @ 3.36 OAL

Tested some Ramshot Magnum in my 30-06 with 208 Amax, 220 SMK, and 240 SMK.

208 Amax - The velocities look good but my rifle doesn't seem to like them

As you'll notice, the ES is pretty big on some of those and that seemed to be the case with the Ramshot Magnum with all of my testing. Some times it was around 20fps and sometimes over 100fps.

Velocity was lower then expected with the 240's but there were no pressure signs. Some of the groups looked good with the 240's and with the 220's. I may ladder up a bit more on the 240's and see what's there. The 220's look promising as the ES's were a bit lower across the board and I had good accuracy and very little vertical with the 63 and 64 grains.

Interesting. I think that the lower than expected velocities and lack of ppessure signs may indicate that a faster propellent burn rate might be more beneficial.

I suspect that full benefit from the Ramshot Magnum might be obtained with a significantly longer barrel.

I would suggest repeating the testing with Ramshot Hunter, and paying closest attention to pressure signs once crossing the 55gr threshhold.

Thanks guys. I was thinking the powder may be too slow. Also, would the wandering ES's be caused by the powder not achieving a complete burn? QL says that, for instance, with the 220smk over 63gr of Ramshot Magnum it is achieving a 98.8% burn.

I actually like the velocity with the 220's 2700ish look possible.

I'm going to ladder up to 61grains for the 240's and see if I can't get to 2600fps

It should spark the slower powder a little fast/hotter. At least the way i see it. may want to back the load down a bit tho.

That's what I thought but a lot of the stuff I'm reading says it's not that big of a difference.

I have some Winchester Magnum primers that I will try with my next batch. I'm going to try some 4350 first with the 210's I've been using and then I'll try some with the 4831 and Ramshot Mag.

Look forward to reading it. I wondered a few months ago about RSmagnum. It looks like a litte tweaking and it may show good results.

You say you werent seeing pressrue at all, so im wondering if it would perform better with max fill or even slight compression.

Interested in this powder with 208-210g bullets in the '06. Might be just a little too slow for me, going to try h4831sc next, maybe then this RM.

Revisiting, rethinking, wondering what the heavies are buying shooters in the .30-'06. IMHO, unless one is looking to extend the distances <span style="font-style: italic">well</span> beyond 1Kyd, I see diminishing returrns with projectile weights above 175-180gr.

First, there's the issue of recoil. Beyond that, excessive recoil indicates, first and foremost, excessive energy expenditure. I have no quibbles with such except that if the task can be accomplished with less, why indulge the excess?

There's a lot of argument in favor of pouring on the coal with a heavier bullet, presumably in the interest of decreasing wind drift.

I think that wind drift is wind drift.

Once you know it, whatever it is, you establish your compensation adjustment and forge on. Bigger drift, smaller drift, learn to accomodate it either way, what's the biggie?

Aside from terminal energy, a hit is a hit.

How much further does one need to shoot than 1Kyd anyway? How many actually can, and how often?

This won't directly apply but in my 6.5-06ai and 140Amax I've been using Ramshot w/215's and getting singel digit ES #'s I've found I have to use alot more of it than say 4831sc to get the same or better fps but it shoots extremely well but it didn't start to really come together till I got up to 61gr. of Ramshot. I'm at 62 now and have yet to see any pressure. It's kinda some funny stuff and seems like you have to get up into it's working pressure zone before it shoots well. Atleast that's what I found. Just something to think about.

I was thinking the same thing on the heavies Greg. I am just about to get a 30/06 build I started a while back and after much research I finally decided to have the gun throated around the 175-180 bullet. I would not be shooting past 1000yds and there was no real benefit for me to tailor it to heavier bullets.

I agree about the 'working pressure zone'. I just think there may be more than one such zone; and that employing one that's a bit more tame combined with a longer barrel to extract the full measure of velocity potential makes the best sense. Bores live and die in direct consequence to the degree of mayhem they sustain. I simply don't feel a need to run them at full throttle all the time.

I guess it's like a muscle car. It's there when you need it; and the less you need it, the longer it's still there.

Magnum in my .25-06 definetely shoots better/cleaner as it approaches maximum charges. I have read that newer powder are formulated to run best/consistent at higher pressures that they were designed to shoot. I suspect that if you work up to pressure signs, you will see where the Magnum shoots better for you with better ES/SD.

.25-06 with 115g NBT, the SD of velocities went from 20-25 down to the teens when max loads were obtained. Just food for thought.

Did you ever settle on a load with the 208's and Ramshot powder?
