I'm new to long range shooting and this forum but I thought I'd post a quick review of the class I've been attending at Range 37 in Bunnlevel, NC.
I have been shooting for most of my life and was Marksman qualified while in the Navy but never really shot further than 300yds. I got interested in extending that and learning the math behind shooting at 1000+ so I decided to sign up for the class. It is divided into multiple levels and to date I've attended the Intro and Intermediate 1 classes.
The intro class was just that, a good intro. It went over rifles, scopes, reticles and ammo. From there it covered target distance estimation using mil dots and very basic wind estimation. The classroom work took until about lunchtime and from there it was off to the range for the rest of the day. With the help of Chad and Frankie the instructors, you shoot increasingly extended ranges on steel targets of various sizes (300yds, 600yds and 800yds time permitting).
If you are interested in long range shooting, this is a fun class that will improve your skill and get you ready for more.
Intermediate 1 picks up where the intro leaves off. You get more in depth with wind estimation and at the range add spotting for your partner, calling the wind and refining your body position to allow you to see the hit. All of this is done between 600 and 800. You will be able to hit a 4" clay at 600yards by the end of the class which for me was pretty impressive.
I have really enjoyed these classes and look forward to the next one. Chad and Frankie are knowledgable and entertaining and approach this in a way that ensures everyone learns, has a good time and builds confidence.
I can't say I'm quite ready for a Long Range competition yet, but with the skills I've learned in this class and a little more time behind the scope, I'm sure I will be soon.
If you live anywhere close and want to learn the skills involved from an outstanding organization, get signed up for the next class at Range 37!
