Range Day with POF P308 PIC HEAVY

OK I went to the range today to shoot my P308 for the first time. First impression is the trigger is very crisp but heavy. That was my first problem. I have mixed reviews so far. My pics below will show 6 different loads from 100 and 200 yards. Any advise or opinions will be appreciated. How do these look. I am no where near an experienced shooter. All groups are 5 shot groups. Sry if there are too many pics. My loads are as follows:

If you don't mind my asking, what has prompted you to sell? If I'm not mistaken, you purchased this rifle within the past 6-8 months.

I'm guessing that you need more time behind the rifle. I would load up some more 44.5 Varget/175gr. SMK's and hit the range. FWIW. That rifle should hold around 3/4 MOA with the right loads.

I am selling it bc I have owned it for this long and I am just now getting to shoot it. Kind of hard to have something this expensive and shoot it rarely.

I can understand that. I don't get to the range very often due to working over 40hrs a week and taking night classes but I'll be damned if I'm selling mine! LoL Best of luck with the sale!

Any ideas of better powder that will meter better through a hornady LNL powder measure. I use the Hornady LNL AP press. As soon as I can get more loads worked up im gonna try more out.

Damn, bro, I really hate to hear things like that. I certainly understand why you really NEED to sell it. If you haven't already, I would be scouring Craigslist for potential employers. Best of luck to you with the job search and the sale.

Did you work those loads up or just pick a powder charge at random? What is it capable of with factory match ammo? It's nice to get a base line with factory ammo so you know if its your skill level holding you back or your load development.

It's just a random load I picked out. I'm gonna order some southwest ammo to compare to as well. I'm gonna work up new loads next week.

You may already know this, but a suggestion for everyone doing load development:

Pick one bullet that you would like to use the most. Obviously the 168/175 SMK's are pretty popular, but whatever one you like the best. Then using that one bullet, load 5 rounds each in 0.5gr increments from 42gr up to whatever max you feel comfortable with (usually in the 45-46gr region). This should give you a much better idea of what load your rifle likes. Once you find one load it like,s you can then fine tune the load a little more in smaller increments. Usual disclaimer applies (be careful when loading up and watch for pressure signs)

When you have a solid load for that one bullet type, then you can play with the other bullets and have a much better starting point.

My POF was my first precision auto. It took me some real trigger time to shoot it well consistently. The online training here was very helpful. Next was the stock change to a PRS and the a Guissele NM trigger in order of what did the trick for me. The trigger is nice but after a lot of trigger time the online training and stock change made the biggest difference. They are more than capable of shooting right with my bolt guns but I have to be on my game more because the platform is less forgiving to lapses in form and trigger pull.

It already has the prs stock but antrigger will be the next step. Also will any ar style trigger work in this rifle?

Yes but something to keep in mind is your POF is a precision rifle and to get the best accuracy from it you need a precision trigger such as the Geissele SSA-E. You will certainly notice a difference in your grouping after installing a good two stage trigger.

Did this come with a Timney trigger? I have a slightly older P-308 and I have had an Eotech on it. I just swapped it out for a Nightfirce scope and plan to to some accruacy testing as you have. I like the 3.5# Timney that came with mine but I have not had a chance to do as much precision work as you have. Do you guys get better accuracy out of the 2 stg triggers or is it just preference?

Poke53: I'd stick with the Varget for the time being, it's a good powder for the .308 and is stable under temperature change. Eliminate one variable at a time, and the first thing you should change is the charge weight. If you keep changing bullets, powders, and charge weights you'll expend a lot more rounds than necessary trying to chase down the perfect load.

I'm getting better accuracy out of a two stage than I did with the single stage trigger. A two stage allows for better trigger control because you know exactly where it's going to break over with each pull.

I had a hell of a time metering Varget through my LNL, great results but the rotor design will basically chop and grind the sticks, not optimal. You can even end up rolling in the case mouth if you use too much leverage. Try 42 grains of RE15 pushing a 168gr SMK at 2.800 OAL. It's Sierra's accuracy load for the 168 and I've had good luck with it. You will probably see only around 2500fps but it should be pretty consistent as the RE15 meters a lot better. Another one to try is 42gr of TAC, probably the second best results I've had, it burns quick so in short barrels you can get good speed plus it meters better than anything through the LNL. Accurate 2520 is also worth a try as it meters really nicely.

Meters great but I've only used it with .223( good results though). I agree with the above post about sticking with Varget and changing one thing at a time.

Can you set up your LNL to function as a single stage for load development?

I am about out of varget and I would like to switch to something else. It will either be rl15 or blc-2. I am just not sure what would be best considering temps here go from 110 to 12 in the different seasons.

vette a 2 stage is the only way to get a trigger breaking weight as light as a precision bolt gun and still be a safe trigger on an AR. I have mine set at 2.5# first stage and 1.5# second stage so I have a safe 4# overall pull but a light pull that matches my bolt guns for the second stage.

That's exactly why Varget is a great choice. Your velocities will not vary much season to season with Varget. FWIW

Check the runout on your handloads. If you have too much runout, your accuracy will go all to hell. If you shoot loads with runout of .0015 thousandths and less (1.5 thousandths and less in case my decimal is wrong) your accuracy will improve dramatically. Also check your seating depth relative to where the ogive for the bullet meets the rifling.

My DPMS rifle was short throated and didn't start shooting properly until I had the short throat corrected. The pressures were really screwy because of the short throat.
