Rifle Scopes Range Finder Suggestions

Re: Range Finder Suggestions

When you say 1000 yards, do you want to pick up trees/shrubs/deer/people at 1000?

Or, would ranging a piece of white-painted steel at 1000 work?

Big difference.

My Leica 1200 picks up street/stop signs out to 1400-1500, white steel at 1150-1200, and foluage/vegetation to 900ish.

Nice unit, but a bit limited.

Make sure to get a unit that "scans", it's a huge help, and boosts your confidence you just ranged the thing you INTENDED to range.

Re: Range Finder Suggestions

I too am in the market for a new rangefinder. In the past few months I have had the opportunity to go out and use everything from Leica and Zeiss to the low end Bushnell and Weaver.

Personally, and the general consensus I have received from other shooters, is the Leica 1600 is the way to go. While it is 2x the cost of some others, none compared to it of the LRF's I tried. Well worth the $$ if you can swing it. Right now many places have the old model for $650 now that the 1600B is released.

Next price range down from that was the Leupold RX-IV(discontinued) and RX-1000. Under ideal conditions I could get them out to 1100 on reflective, 800ish on trees

Yes Vectronix would be nice but way out of budget for many of us.

Also like turbo said, first exactly define your needs and budget and go from there.

Re: Range Finder Suggestions

If you want a 1,000 yards, you want a 1,500 IMHO or greater for cloudy days or poor contrast targets. I had a Lieca 600 on an Elk hunt and I hated it. It was struggling to pick up 475.

My Bushnell Arc 1600 is very nice. I did keep the leica for Bow hunting due to its size.

Re: Range Finder Suggestions

I have a leupold 1000i, it does the trick for most of what I use it for. Was around 200 or so. You could always sell a testicle for a terrapin, think would be a sound investment. Only need one right?

Re: Range Finder Suggestions

The Bushnell Arc 1600 looks like a good pick but would dig more info from users. I would like to be able to check white steel at 800-1000 yards with a unit with no issues. Will the Bushnell make this happen or do I need to look at the Leica 1600?

The Bushnell 1600 Arc Binos easily pick up white painted steel at 1000, have had hits to 1300 no probs - I've had houses and trees ranged up to 1800 yards.
I do a lot of LR shooting at field firing ranges at targets like old tank hulks, unfortunately the dark rusty metal don't reflect as well and I can't get readings on them much beyond 1000 yards, it will however pick up the range of a tree or foliage next to it.
Can't complain for the money (even though we get ripped off over here on the price...)!

Re: Range Finder Suggestions

I have a Bushnell 1600 without ARC. On cloudy days I can range out to 1600 yards. If you have a reflective target it does great. There is a guy on here that lives in the desert and made a reflective target using reflective tape and my Bushnell ranges off that instantly. Best idea ever. My target is 12"x12". I have had mine for a few years and very happy with it.
The only thing I would change for longer ranges it that they made a range finder with 10x.

this....mine seem to be excellent. hit a small traffic light at 1175 (farthest target i can hit at my house). excellent buy for the money.

Re: Range Finder Suggestions

The vectronix is freakin awesome...but $$$$

My Leica 1200 SCAN has performed very well in competition. I bought mine here used for $400.

Re: Range Finder Suggestions

I would get the Leica 1600, I can read a 12"x12" white metal plate @ 1000 yds and the glass is very clear, it's very small & light which is a + if you do any walking carrying your gear but it also makes it hard to keep it steady, I used a Nikon monarch gold 1200 before I purchased the Leica & I never had any issues with it but the leica is a huge improvement.
