100yrd 3 shot groups...

Would fire three as best as i can, walk down 100yds mark the shot numbers, walk back... repeat... enough time to keep me from getting tired behind the scope, lil time to decompress... except on the 45.0 grain group, got a call before 2nd string of 3 and got sloopy... think ive settled on 46.0gn of H4831sc...

Re: Range Report Newman .260 - Load Developement

Now you just need to load up some more at 46gr and reshoot a couple groups and see if the results are repeatable. I've gotten some groups like that during load development, and when I went back to see if I could repeat it, I couldn't. Often a load that didn't look as well during development shot better when I retested.

Lately, i've been finding that it's easier to load for standard deviation over a chrono. Find the load with the lowest SD, and that tends to be the best load (for me). I've had some loads that had extreme spreads (ES) of over 100fps that shot great at 100 yards. However, i've also found that in my rifle (built up), just about everything shoots well, it's just that extra little bit is what i'm trying to get.

Just remember that a group that shoots great at 100 doesn't mean it'll shoot great at 1000, or even 600. That's why I load for low SD's. I can eliminate the verticle stringing that most folks get at long range due to velocity variation. My first time at 700 shooting groups was recently, and the verticle component of the group was only 2" (excluding my called pulled round which impact right where I said it would). However the horizontal stringing from the wind was about 10". All my groups had very little verticle except for 500 and 600 (because I sucked at getting my rear rest correct).

Otherwise, those are still good groups. 3round groups are still a good diagnostic IMO, however for confirmation of repeatability, 5 is better.

Save yourself the walk. Keep a second target at the bench, and mark down the shots and any notes, like 'pulled left', or 'barrel very hot', on it, then transfer the info to the real target when you're all done shooting. With my cardiopuilmonary situation, such treks are not a pleasant passtime, so I've been motivated to improvise.

Knowing bore length/rifling twist and the bullet in question would make things easier for the rest of us.
