Rifle Scopes Ranging an object with the reticle

If it's first focal plane version, then you should be able to do it at all magnifications(If you can read the sub-tensions?). Second Focal plane, then at the highest mag. or it might be marked on the mag. ring with a dot? First you have to know the predetermined measurements of said object. IPSC Plate Person 20"x40", not including the head? What object are we talking about?

Whatever gives you the best resolution. Ranging with a FFP optic is the same at all power levels, more mag and the sub tensions get further apart as the image gets larger, either way the number of mils an object is will remain the same. You just need to have some sort of size reference of what you are ranging.

In a FFP reticle you can use any magnification as far as you are able to see the subtensions on it, the other thing you need to know is the approximate dimensions of the target you are ranging, if you don't know your target measurements you can use any other object near it.
