Rayner's Long Range Rifle Matches in Ohio schedule

Might as well post this up since the season starts in a couple of weeks. It's pretty simple .... the 4th Sunday of every month February through October. There are also USPSA pistol matches and a Multigun match if you're interested. The rifle match targets are from about 200 out to 900 yards. Food and drinks available. See you there.

Might need really tall bipods for the prone rifle guys to see over the snow or learn to shoot sitting? Maybe the big melt will happen before then.

It might be a BYOS event.

I suppose we'll just have to use the crutches ...... er I mean benches that are provided.

Maybe Tom will shovel a spot out for us. Did you get your new scope mount? Dale get his barrel yet? I think this year will be interesting to watch the evolution of equipment with so many guys jumping into this game.

The new 10 position has not come yet but we did get son a 3-12 Burris like mine so when my mount comes he'll be ready to switch my 5 position mount to his gun with the new scope.

Can't wait to get to try it out on real targets. Didn't count on a winter like this and not being able to get out to give the mount a good workout. Got high hopes for them though.

I did get my 6.5mm barrel but no time to have it chambered to 260 and mounted before shooting starts so it'll be for next year.

Dale is still waiting on barrels for both guns, hopefully we'll be ready for Rayners but not looking good just yet. I'm kinda interested to see how the rifle scope works on his this year but I'm stubborn and will stick with a pistol scope. Guess I like being handicapped that way

Usually I love winter but I've had my fill of it this year, can't wait to see dandelions this spring.

Did they put in a new position or is it the same as last year. If the weather doesn't hurry up and change my daughter is not going to come out and play.I guess we'll see in a couple weeks.

We are itching to get started. The 4th station depends on the weather. If it is to muddy or nasty to shoot from on top we can still shoot 800yards from the main rifle bay. There will be a fourth station either way. See Ya.

I'm probably going to be shooting a different rifle every now and then. I have a Savage I put together for a friend that travels and won't be back until June or so. I'm also pondering selling my Ruger, but am still debating that one since it does everything I want it to.

I was there yesterday for a pistol match .... it's probably going to be a weeeee bit muddy, so wear your boots. Tom had to move the benches down from the hill, so it will be 800 yards max.

800yds max LOL I didn't hit it when it was 900yds and I'm shooting a different rifle. Need to get some good data before I turn my daughter loose with it.

Could someone fill me in on how the match is run? Number of rounds, what the targets are, etc? Don't think I will be able to attend this month, but next month I will be ready to shoot.

I'll go by what we do in the summer months. Shooters split up into 2 groups. One will go to positon one and the other to position 2 which is really only about 50 yards apart but shooting in different directions. Position one has a 200 and a 500 yard target. You get 3 shots at each distance. All 3 hits can count. At 200 yards it is a small 8.5" x 14" IPSC shaped target. At the 500 yard target there is a full size IPSC (worth 5 points), 15" round circle (worth 10 points) and another small IPSC target worth 15 points. Up to you which you wish to shoot at and take the gamble on small points and easier to hit or big points and a possible miss.

Postion two has another small IPSC target at 300 yards and a 15" round circle at a lil under 400 yards. Same deal, 3 shots at each distance for score. All these are also worth 10 points each.

Then a break for lunch usually happens and then everyone heads up to top of the hill for the 600 and 900 yard targets. Each of those distances have the three different size targets so you can choose which to shoot at for points.

He is planning on possibly adding a 700 and 800 yard target the opposite direction we shoot the 600 and 900 and probably with the same three different target sizes. There are benches at each location but many tactical guys like to do it in the dirt and do the prone thing. Up to you what you wish to do.

Great fun match and very challenging and is in natural settings with various lighting and wind conditions. Right now 18 rounds will do you and if he adds the other targets then 24 should do you. He did mention possibly finding room for a 1000 yard target also. Bring at least 50 so you can stick around afterwards on top of the hill and poke at that lil 900 yarder for bragging rights.

Well come on, tell us how that new savage shoots. How did you get it so fast, I didn't think they came out until March. I'v been dying to get behind one to see if I can handle the recoil. Do you like it?

No I met him at TVP the day of that shoot. That is his 308 but he was telling me about ordering the 338. That pic was taken about a month ago.

I'm working my loads up now for this shoot but I have yet to get a range card with my new scope/stock because of weather lately so I'm in for it this weekend. OH well at least I'll be able to put a range card together.

yep its the .308 but it will shoot 1/2 minute all day long.
i am hoping to have the .338 soon i ordered the first one from vances in columbus a month ago.
i'll have twins then lol!!!
looking forward to the shoot though.

I'll be missing this one, really hate to miss all the fun but should have the last of the equipment we've been waiting on middle of next week to get both guns back together. Hope to get them all together and sighted in for all the March shoots, looks like there will be one nearly every weekend at either Rayners or TVP for us all summer.

Talked to Dale today and I guess Tom was setting targets today in the blizzard. Think he moved the 600/900 bench down near the shelter for an 800 and some other distance. And also added 2 more on the back side of the hill in the 700 and some other yard distance. Should be a fun match if ya can see the targets thru the snow.

Looks like this summer is gearing up for a lot of fun and challenging matches. Might have heard something mentioned about bringing your own snowshovel just in case?

Lets rumble,bbl for the Striker came yesterday ,put it together last night,got a 200yd zero a few minutes ago,everything seems close to the other guns settings so lets party ,I will be there flying by the seat of my pants as we go along ?

Everything went fairly well. The snow melting is less than ideal, but still better than staying at the house. I'd bet the next couple of weeks are going to suck as far as moving through fields and such. 16 shooters showed up and the snow swollowed up most bullets that didn't hit the target. We mostly had to rely on the guy in the spotting scope to call shots from bullet trace. Hang in there guys .... spring is coming!!!

Hey guys I am a newbie to this match shooting. I am coming down this year to try my hand at it. I am just wondering what type of equipment I need to have for this type of shooting. Rest, bags, safety, etc? What type of rests are recommended? Or will a BR type bipod with a rear bag work? How bout shooting mat? Thanks in advance for the info!

If you like to shoot prone, bring a mat bipod and rear bag. Each station has two benches to use as well if you prefer. Ears, glasses, rifle and ammo is what you'll need. If you forget anything, you'll likely find most people at the match will loan you what you need.

Its nice to know ahead of time the dope for your perticular rifle/bullet combination. If you don't know how/where to get dope for your rifle, we'll help you out there as well. You should know your velocity though.

Thanks Jim for the help. I am working on a couple loads for a 308 and 6mm rem. I believe both of these calibers should be sufficient for this type of shooting. The weather should permit me to get out this week and do some testing, so i can get there asap!
