Has anybody had any problems with RCBS competition seating dies tearing up bullets? I got one for x-mas and it marred up the ogives pretty bad (I think it looks bad anyway) It really marred up some Berger VLD's I was loading. I ment to save one for pics but I forgot to set it aside and shot it today at the range.

I've loaded a couple thousand rounds of .308 with mine and haven't noticed any deformation or marks of any kind. Although, I haven't loaded any VLDs. I've loaded 175 smks, 168 smks, 155 scenars, 165 sgks without issue.
What kind of neck tension are you using? Does it take a significant amount of force to seat the bullet?
I neck size with a Lee Collet die and the bullets seat very smoothly with minimal force on a RCBS Rockchucker. I've also seated bullets into brass that was full length sized on Redding dies without any noticeable increase in force required to seat the bullet.

I'm not sure, I'm going to load some Matchkings and see if there are any problems. I full length size with a lee die and never has any problems before using the Lee seater.

I have the comp die and the guts to change it from .223 to .308, the only time I have a problem is with my .223 and loading Varget that is extemely compressed, it leaves a slight ring around the bullet.
If yours is marring the bullets, I would take it apart and see if there is a burr on it, you may need to take your Chamfer tool and clean it up.

I thought about doing that but I wanted to hear from others before I did. I'mnot really excited about paying $75 on a die and having to "clean it up" for it to work right. Especially when my $10 Lee seater works fine out of the box. Thanks for the suggestions.

I have two RCBS competition die sets one for 308 and one for 223. I combine the two when I am loading for my 22-250. I have found they work excellent with all the various bullets I have used in them and never had any issues. If you are having issues with yours I suggest you call RCBS. They have excellent customer service. I have always been amazed at how helpful they are.

I don't care much for that die but I'll defend it on this; all seater die makers leave sharp corners on seater punches from time to time. The circular marks are harmless so we have three choices; get a new one, fix what we have or live with it. I fix 'em.
All we need to do is remove the seater stem, chuck it lightly in a drill and hold a bit of medium grit black sandpaper (carborundum) wrapped around a pencil point to round and smooth the edge of the bullet cavity as it spins. Takes maybe ten minutes and you're done with it.
