One of the local match directors mentioned the possibility of a 308 only match. While my initial reaction was horror I figured I'd do some thinking about what could really be done with a 308. I am a big 260 fan and am all set with parts to toss together another rifle in 260, but now I'm thinking of a 308.
Based on some late-night calculations I think I should be able to push a 215gr Berger Hybrid to at least 2580fps out of a 28" barrel. That would actually give me less wind drift (more drop though) than my 260. I know a number of guys are using the 208 Amax in their rifles with good results, and the 215 Hybrid is a significant step up in BC with only a small increase in weight.
Am I crazy to even be thinking about this? Obviously the 308 would have more recoil in this case but it would also have some advantages such as long barrel life and the fact that it would be permitted under pretty much any match rules. I think it would be pretty cool to see the 308 use the newer bullets and powders to stand toe-to-toe with the other popular tactical match cartridge choices.
