Realistic Lapua Budget?

I posted this also in the RPR thread, but I hope it’s OK I create a separate thread too.

My friend, who was an army sniper, has his heart set on either a 50 BMG or a 338 Lapua, and he has been leaning towards the lapua because there’s almost nowhere around here you can fire a 50 BMG. When he found out about the RPR lapua, he was all set to make the buy, but then someone he talked to told him there’s no point in getting a lupua without spending a minimum 12 grand. Does anyone know where this guy is coming from?

Sounds like your buddy would benefit from doing a bit more research before making a purchase. Perhaps you could suggest he do some reading here. There is a ton of great info on caliber and rifle choice.
And whoever told him to spend 12k was definitely smoking crack. The rpr is ok, there are definitely nicer rifles though.

Your friend who was a sniper should hopefully have the G2 to see past that shit. I'll leave it at that.

As with any firearm these days; it takes an hour and a cup of coffee to get an idea of what you're possibly getting into (half a dozen YouTube videos and forum threads).

I am not nor have I ever been a sniper, but I do enjoy shooting and have been for over 20 yrs. I have the RPR 338 I have only shot it out to 600yds a handful of times so far it has been around a 1 MOA rifle haven't had any feeding or extraction problems only shot Hornady factory ammo so far. I did replace the factory trigger with a Timney trigger I personally do not like the blade type trigger within a trigger "Savage Style" I call them. Is it a Accuracy International? Absolutely not. Will something that gets shot by it down range know the difference? Absolutely Not.

Actually youd be supprised the amount of snipers that are not that smart when it comes to firearm's and such. Does the school house teach them to shoot? Sure!!!!. But the second you give them one of say mine or your personal rifle. They will get extremely lost.

Like the guy that told me you could not swap out the Leopold mark 4 ERT from a M2010 onto the M110. Simply cause the m110 wont work with a mil based scope. Or that you could only fire 5 round from a Barret 50cal before you suffer internal organ damage. Yes he was B4 Qualified and ran a sniper section.

no self respected Army sniper is going to shoot a ruger RPR.

Have him email DTA about an HTI at the .mil rate if he’s eligible. With a $12k budget he’d have enough left over for a used truck to drive out to nice public land shooting areas.

You should talk about ammo cost with him. Yes it's easy to like to shoot 338 lapua on tax payer money but when he starts paying for it he 'll think differently about it. Ammo cost is the biggest issue unless he plans to reload on a single press.

I have to disagree with this. I know far more about individual weapons now (retired 12 years ago) than I did while I was in the Army. I knew Army weapon systems and that was it! And...I would own a RPR though, for some reason, I always seem to go with something else.

Sorry, you are delusional if you believe him. Many ages ago sniper school was actually under my span of control. Long before that I graduated a MTT which is taught in two parts so while I don’t have the B4 I have half the school. Show me his ERB where it lists B4.

I like RPR’s for budget guns, but I would not buy one of the magnum ones.

If he wants a budget gun see if you can find an older Remington Police MLR. They’re great rifles after you pull the POS brake off that they come with and put a good one on it. They pop up occasionally for $1000 or so. For $2500 he can get into a used TRG-42 which is on another level from the Remington or Ruger.

Or for $6750 he can get a new AXMC. The best, and still well under $12K even with 308 and 300WM conversion kits when he finds out that shooting lapua all the time sucks.

My friend was an army sniper in the 1980s. He didn’t even know about all the new calibers when we started shooting PRS Club matches last year. He showed up to his first match with an old Remington .308. He’d also never worked without a spotter telling him what to dial, so lots to learn. I actually scored better than him the first couple of matches running my AR15. Now he has the 6mm RPR, and he’s doing better, but still mid pack on a good day.

He knows that the lapua factory loads start at $2.80. He has a single stage press already. Not sure about lapua barrel life?

His ERB has the B4 Identifier on it. I asked and he produced his ERB with it. You want a copy go hunt him down. Im not going to go chase after someone who has taken their stupidity with him.
