Here is my issue guys, I've been getting a 300wm together using a 700xcr. I couldnt get the small screw in on the base last weekend but shot it anyways because I just had to. The screw stripped and I assumed it was just a bad screw from Badger and as expected they sent me out new screws and had them in a week.
Now I just tried to put the screw in and sure enough, screw stripped again under minimal force (20 in lbs range). The threads are fine in the rifle and the larger screws seem to thread in just fine with the base off, or on I guess for that matter. The more I look at it the base does not appear perfectly lined up with the factory tappings, but pretty damn close. Definately not something I could take a picture of for reference, too small... Now for a not so low end Remington I'm a little surprised if the threads are out of whack, i've never had an issue with any sps-v's or huntings rifles of mine.
The question is what do I do?? I highly doubt the Badger base is the problem and I really dont want to drill it open, so do you think I need to get the rifle re-tapped for the upsized threading and ensure its true? Then I would probably need to open the base up a bit to accept the larger screws. I'm no gunsmith would obviously need someone to do this work for me, so thats the next question. Where in the Northern Virginia area is there a gunsmith that you would trust doing this on your rifle? I really dont want to send it out anywhere and have a crazy long wait for the work.
Any help or advice would be greatly appreciated, Im pretty frustrated with it and would love to have it fully set up and ready to shoot. I have a beautiful Leupold I got from A-train that Im dying to try out!!!
