Rifle Scopes Rear Leupold ring just sits on the base??

I need to add a cheaper (but not junk) base and rings onto my 700P and I was looking at the Leupold base pictured below:

I watched some youtube videos on how they work and rear ring just sits on the base?? Is this a stable mounting solution if only the front ring is holding the scope to the rifle?

I plan on using the same mounting system on a future hunting rifle and that just perplexes me the way these bases and their rings work...

Am I worrying over nothing?

No. The two rear screws on the base are concave on the side that touches the bottom of the ring. There is an oppossing cut on the bottom of the ring which looks like a half moon.When both the rear screws are screwed to the ring it holds it in place.

Right, I understand that the base wont move side to side if you have the windage screws tightened down, but how about up and down?

Like, if you grabbed the rear of your scope and pulled up, would the ring pull away from the base? I'm sure you'd have more to worry about with your scope if you did that, I'm just using that as an example.

I bought this base for my 7mm mag hunting rig about 15 years ago. Has it held up? Yea, but I don't shoot that rifle much. Would I buy it again? No. I didn't know about the picatiny base back then.

The front ring dovetails into the base. If you buy it, whatever you do, do not place the ring on your scope tube and twist the ring into place on the base. You could seriously damage your scope tube. Use a short piece of 1" dowel.

No. It will not pull up under normal usage.
The screw has a machined cup in the end, the side that touches the ring is concave....like this ( the other screw looks like this ). LOL. It goes screw( (ring) )screw.

I'd go the dual-dovetail route long before even considering the standard setup pictured above.

Also think about DNZ, and Talley Lightweight. Either is under $50.

You have a way with words!

The Leupold base/rings are very solid. I've used them for a long time with zero problems. Make sure you understand what ring alignment means, torque everything to specs, and use a big enough screwdriver for the rear ring attachment screws. I've seen lots of them boogered up and they look like crap.

Keep in mind, most designated hunting rifles come out of the safe, into a case, out to the field. Get toted around by the sling and never see a high round count. That rifle and base I was referring to has less than 30 rounds down the tube. My .308 alone will see five times that on any given weekend.

It seems you have made your decision to go with this base. It's sturdy and will serve you well. I won't move up down or sideways if you frequently check thightness of the two cap screws. Remember blue Locktight, not red.

i have used them many times. be sure they are aligned..............not my first choice any more.

some companies(nighforce) say right in the manual not to use them

I have used them for years. 1000 rounds of .30-06 and 1900 rounds on another in .270 Win have not moved the mounts. FWIW the military used this mount on the sniper rifle version of the Springfield. It is not cutting edge any more, but still works.

Yeah, as long as it holds up to hunting season and trips to the range, that's all I care about.

Unless any of you fine gents would like to donate a Badger Ord 0moa base.... Christmas was just last week

you can get a weaver one piece tactical base for ~$20 and rings for about the $30.

there have been some positive reviews here on the hide for them.

Windage adjustable bases are a fix for warpped recievers, or miss drilled recievers. If your mounting holes are true to the bore, this base is not needed. The only thing holding the rear ring on is the tightness of the opposing adjuster screws, but it is captured between them.
