Rebarreling a Small/Standard Shank Savage to 6.5 PRC?

I took in a Savage 10 Stealth on trade. It has been blueprinted at the factory the best my research tells me and sits in the DA Chassis.

My question is can I have a barrel spun up for a PRC to play in the 6.5 world with the small shank action? I know I can have the barrel spun up, however, I don't know if I can put a magnum bolt head on the bolt. My research hasn't turned up much about doing this and I figure this is a good place to get some knowledge on the subject.

As a side note, the PRC seems a bit long for mag feed in a SA, to the tune of 3+" for factory ammo. Can anyone verify?

No, I don't really want a CM as it seems to be the man bun of the long range calibers, although I may be forced to go that direction.

Compatible With:
  • Savage 10 Short Action 4.275" Spacing
  • Savage 10 Short Action 4.4" Spacing
  • Savage 110

Measure your barrel nut 5/8'' is large shank and 7/8'' is small shank.
Long Action: 5.062" Spacing

That's a shitty illustration.

NSS should do better.

If it is the length of the barrel nut being measured, it should look more like "--->| |<---".

Are you sure it is small shank? I thought all of the *factory blueprinted* models was large shank?
According to the shitty illustration above, created by someone who has no business whatsoever giving dimension details, I think its a small shank but now I'll have to look when I get home. This quandary will annoy me until then and I'm out of Copenhagen.

I might fire someone so I feel better....

My 112 bt is a small shank. Says "Savage Competition" on the bolt, has a Palma rail under the forearm, don't know if it's factory blueprinted or not. Pretty sure I bought the same bolt face, it will need drilled because my firing pin it too big.

That bolt head can't be compatible with everything listed by Midway. The tenon behind the cross pin is shorter on the short actions. Compare the length with yours when it arrives.

I shortened a long action magnum bolt head to work in a Model 10. PTG will let you order them with any bolt face and tenon length.

I don't have any factory 6.5prc ammo, but the SAAMI max is 2.955". It might not fit in the plastic mag that comes with the gun, but Accurate Magazines makes one that is advertised to go to 2.950". I use them with a 7/300wsm and they're 2.985" inside.

I'd be surprised if anything with a 308 case head wasn't small shank. Savage has been using the same firing pin diameter in everything since 2001. The firing pin lengths are different between the long and short actions. Non belted magnums have longer bolt lugs and use a different firing pin for both the long and short actions. I've adjusted 308 case head firing pins to work with longer bolt lugs.

Pretty sure all Stealths are "blueprinted" and also large shank barrels. From what I remember, all "blueprinted" actions were large shank. From a company that is massively driven by production simplicity, I can't believe that they would have a small shank/large shank "blueprinting" system.

Bolt faces might be different, but just order a short action one from Savage or PTG and you are good to go. 6.5 PRC is best out of a long action, you will likely run into COAL issues out of it, but the Accurate mags with NO binderplates will get you the most.

I can't speak from personal experience with 6.5PRC so I cant give any advice on COAL and fitting in mags but.........I have a savage 10 with a .338 Norma Magnum bolt face (custom)

Also have .223 bolt and .308 bolt

This is on a small shank

6.5 PRC factory ammo is 2.95" COAL. Mag has to take at least that. If you can get out to 2.98 with the Accurate Mags at 2.985 and reload, you will be very happy.
I would shoot some factory ammo while waiting on dies to come in. I hope some better brass hits the market soon though. If I could get 147s to 3000 out of a 27-28" barrel, I'll be happy.

Alamo Precision just re barreled my Savage short action to 6.5 PRC. Gun was originally a 7.82 Patriot Lazzeroni/Savage with the flat base action. Can’t remember the model number.

Be cautious with ptg bolts. The first one was drop in in a model 12 varmint action. I ordered 2 more for later builds, neither one would come close to fitting in raceway on a target action model12.
