Rebarreling an AW50

I am not pleased with the factory barrel on my AW50. Rather, I suppose I should say I am not pleased with the accuracy I am getting. It walks all over the target, stringing progressively further to the right as the barrel warms up. I guess it's just too dainty. I figure as long as I'm re-barreling I might as well add a few inches while I'm doing it, even if it means that my fitted case will no longer work with the rifle. Maybe I should get a Stinger missile case anyway!

So does anyone know a gunsmith who does good work on 50BMGs, or better yet, has anyone had their AW50 re-barreled? Does GAP do work on 50BMGs?

Ha! You'd think so wouldn't you?! Actually I emailed Diann at MHSA about it (I bought it through them) and unfortunately she never replied.

I figure I can just get a 29" or 30" fluted stainless Lilja navy profile barrel, have a gunsmith finish and install it and be done with my problems...

Re: Rebarreling an AW50

If you can't get through to Dianne at MHSA about it...see if you can't get ahold of Stacey Blankenship (with AI North America/AINA) who is a member here on the forum.

Every AW50 I have had my hands on was very capable of holding good accuracy with sustained shooting and I have never seen one string shots with barrels heating up. Something is awry one way or another and if you bought the rifle new from MHSA, AI needs to make it right (you of all people know how much you paid for it and you also have a reasonable right to expect it to shoot properly within the limits of its design)!!

Re: Rebarreling an AW50

I would to contact AI with more than one email instead of just going and getting it re barreled. Save that money for ammo/components. With the way computers are, who knows if she even received the e-mail.

Fair enough, I just sent an email to Adam Bauer as he was my sales rep for the AW50. Failing that I'll try Stacey, but I'm sure Adam'll probably get back to me.

Re: Rebarreling an AW50

"Not pleased"

Seriously, if i coughed up 12K on a rifle, and it didnt print well, I'd be fucking pissed. Any notion of the word "please" would be completely out of my vocabulary

Just new production Igman, but there are two mitigating factors. (1) I was getting ~1.5 MOA using that ammo in my Barrett 95, and (2) I'm only going out to 200 yards for want of a bigger/better range.

I finally got my AW50 back from Mark ... about a month and a half ago. Here's a photo with the 29" Navy profile Lilja Precision bbl.

I hate to admit it, but absurdly enough I still haven't even sighted it in yet. I really need to find some time to take it out for a spin, maybe when the weather starts to cool off.

No, I never got around to it, my barrel came from Lilja very quickly so I decided to just go ahead and install it. The gunsmith (Mark Pharr) told me the receiver threads weren't perfectly aligned with the bolt -- an issue he fixed during the re-barrel. I don't really know the details, or if that would have caused my issue or if it was just a bad barrel.
