Rebarreling what cartridge should I use? Looking for interesting suggestions

I have an old Ruger M77, tang safety. Right now it's chambered in 7mm rem mag. I'm cleaning it up, the barrel is rusty, but the action is in good shape. I want a lightweight hunting rifle, but I don't mind thinking outside the box on what cartridge to use. I already handload for two 7mm mag rifles.

I have considered just doing another one. But I wanted to ask The Hide if anyone had any interesting suggestions this long action with a magnum bolt face?

If you hand load can do 300WSM and load it longer because of the extra room.

in all honesty, sell that and buy a better action. I don't know a smith that would touch that cast action with a ten foot pole

How is the barrel rusty. I gave my dad an m77 in 7mm and it was blued and coated in some sort of plastic. I made the joke they laminated it. But it didnt seem like it would be fun to remove.

You need to meet a good smith then if they are scared to rebarrel a rifle.

What is it that one is supposed to gleam from that link?
In 2013 in one forum post by one third party person who is claiming to have been told by another person that he was told by @Terry Cross that he doesnt want to work on one with "the funny angles"

Which can only be interpreted to mean he doesnt like having to deal with an angled action screw. Zero about casting or being untrue or really anything of actual substance.

I would assume that if the claim is true then its because terry cross builds terry cross rifles and isnt farming out looking to work on stuff that isnt his own kmw terry cross stuff.

7mm Sherman Max.

basically a 7SAUM with a 40deg shoulder. Designed to push 195’s to 3k in a 26” barrel Whether you get there or not depends but it’ll push them hard.

You can buy the fully formed brass from

or you could buy 7saum brass and fire form it in your chamber. Basically just blows the shoulder out to 40deg and you’re gtg.

Or you could run the 280 Sherman, which is a 280AI with a 40DEG shoulder

been kicking around a few of his cartridges but haven’t decide on anything yet. The sparcity of magnum powderes right now has got me really thinking abut just sticking with a 7 mag.

It wad stored poorly and the bluing was worn through. It's pretty gross looking.

I'm planning on Elk hunting with this rifle and I'm not sure if I want to go that small. I haven't heard much about how the 131s perform on game?

Now there's a suggestion! I've never heard of a 7 sherman max. I thought about maybe going with a 284 shehane, but it seemed a little played out.

280 sherman sounds equally interesting and I have never had problems driving tacks with an 06 cartridge.

From what I’ve read the 131 is a great hunting bullet. Cold bore miracle, he’s a member here if I recall, has some great videos/articles on his quarter bore ventures. I’m pretty sure he uses it on mule deer and pronghorn

The PRC's are great. I've barreled up a few Rugers, they needed a little work but turned out great.

What I was thinking would not fit in that action. However, my next suggestion is both old school but back in fashion. The .264 Winchester, or the .257 Weatherby both with fast twist barrels, to shoot the newer bullets (especially the new .257 heavy for caliber bullets in the .257 Weatherby.)

Go with a longer barrel with a Weatherby style #2 profile to keep weight reasonable with straight fluting. Throw in a nicely figured french walnut stock of your choice of style, a decent trigger and a modern scope and you are ready for show and go.

The 7mm’s really give a lot of performance With mild recoil and reasonable cost.

But really, with that action, I would do a 375 H&H or 375 Ruger with a 20 or 22 inch Proof carbon fiber barrel, and make it a guide gun.
