So as I go forward, I am shooting my Rem 700 VS in .308, but l feeling around for equipment in the 6.5 or 6 mm category.

I hear all about burning through barrels and I can believe it, doing handgun matches where 200 rounds is a norm (easily a couple thousand rounds per year). Now PRS matches are more like 100, but if you do 1 a month, that could burn up a barrel in 2 years. How important is it to be able to DIY barrel changes--i read a lot about barrel nuts, the savage system, remage, and even impact receivers with pre-fit barrels. How long does it take to get a rifle rebarreled if it isn't a DIY job. Is this really a concern (I went to a class with a top PRS shooter and he went through 4 barrels a year--YIKES!) or do I need to be looking for a system where I can do my own barrel changes.

changing barrel yourself = barrel vise, and torque wrench

shouldered is best option (ARC, zermatt/bighorn, impact, lone peak, new defiance, tikka, terminus)

but remage/savage prefits expand that though basically the same actions. but you then need headspace gauges too and get skinnier barrels

your rem700 cant take a prefit shoudlered barrel. it's a shit action out of the box. a gunsmith needs it in hand to measure

my bighorn TL3 is made precise enough i can order a barrel from any competent smith and screw it on.

a shouldered barrel for an action that is precise enough to take them, you just torque on and shoot. that's it. comes in mail.throw in vise. torque. shoot.

Remage or let a smith measure your action for a shouldered barrel and after that they can make prefits
Both Are really easy.

I’ve ran a total of 5 barrels now with barrel nuts and will certainly continue to buy them because of the convenience but am probably going to a shouldered barrel next for my custom action.

I take it all the major custom actions support pre-fits? (possibly an argument away from that "starter" rifle into a "PRS Production" rifle)

My 6.5x284 has a Rem. 40X action, and a 30" Krieger barrel. When accuracy suffers can't i just have my Smith cut an inch off of the chamber and re-chamber it?

No, because there’s erosion much further down the bore than one inch.

You technically can do it, but it isn’t money well spent. You end up spending the entire cost of a thread/chamber job for a few hundred more rounds tops.

Used barrel are fire hardened and Hell on tooling also.

No, because there’s erosion much further down the bore than one inch.

That makes the fact that I had a 30" barrel installed in the first place a little moot!

No, you would order a chambered, threaded, shouldered barrel from a smith of choice. Once it shows up, you'd put the barrel in a barrel vise, thread your custom action onto it and use an action wrench to torque the action to the barrel.

Not all are machined to the exact tolerances that will allow a pre-fit barrel.
