I have a 45/70 Marlin Guide Gun which I use for bear. Typically, I shoot 325g LeverEvolutions out of it though I do have some 405g Cor-Bons for CQB. While recoil is subjective it's fairly common knowledge among 45/70 shooters that these loads, even the lighter ones, have a pretty good kick to them. Can an XD-38A handle the recoil?

Second question for any 38A (I prefer a 38C or 38D but that's a completely different story) owners - how frequently do you run through a calibration? Every time you startup? Thanks in advance.

Assuming that you are talking about the Pulsar thermal unit, I think those machines are 308 maximum recoil rated
I wonder what model you have ; Apex ?
As far as calibration, those units have three settings :

- manual ( witch you have to close the lens cover and push the button) I don't like it at all

- semi-auto ( witch you don't have to close the cover but you still have to push the button) my favorite setting

-and automatic ( witch you don't have to do anything)
but for weapon mounted thermal this is not a good choice of setting , as it could cause miss shots

My understanding is APEX is good for .375H&H also ... I have run XD50A off .300WM ... but I think going by pure cartridge is not valid. My 6.5G(18) has more felt recoil than the .300WM(24) because the .300WM(24) is 20 pounds in the field and the 6.5G(18) is 12 pounds in the field.

I would say "as often as needed" ...

The Pulsars have three modes: Auto, Semi, Manual

Auto means the device nucs when it thinks it needs to. If in this mode, the pulsars I've had nuc fairly often in the first few minutes. I run my pulsars in manual mode as when hunting, I do not want the momentary "freeze" or the noise of the nuc.

Currently all my thermals can be run in manual mode and that's the way I run then.
I nuc all thermals about 5 times in the first 5 minutes ... and then about every 5m there after .. if I think I am going near where I will encounter a critter, I nuc again. I do not want to be distracted by thinking I need to nuc if a critter is in site ...

Nuc early, nuc often !

:)

One of the reasons I opted for the pulsar over the armasight is the recoil rating, at the time it was being marketed as 338 lapua ready as opposed to the armasights 308 rating.

I use the hybrid calibrating, or nucing, as it works like the manual in that I choose when to do it by pressing the button only I dont have to personally close the lens cap before, it automatically will close its internal shutter unlike the manual setting. When you first turn it on press it a few times in the first 5 minutes, after its warm it shouldnt need to be nuced that often. You will notice the sight picture washing out and a quick hit of the cal button clears it all up again.
