Good morning Gents,

Yesterday I was switching out the stock on my 700 and noticed that the barrel was touching the right side of the stock. So I call my buddy and ask him if he had this problem with this stock since he has it on one of his 700's. He proceeds to ask me if my recoil lug was straight with the action since Remington seems to not check this when the barrels and actions are assembled.

Turns out the recoil lug is not properly aligned therefore thats why barrel touches the edge of the stock.

So my probably dumb question is can I tap the lug with a rubber mallet to align or should I take it to a gunsmith to align?

In my completely uneducated and unprofessional opinion that should be taken with a grain of salt... You could always try the mallet tap method. If it works, great. If not, you were going to have to take it to the Smith anyways. If it does move the lug though, you should probably check headspace before declaring it a complete success.

If your recoil lug is not on square, you will have to unscrew the barrel from the action and reset the lug so it is on straight. It is also possible that the lug is on straight, but the stock is inletted off center. In the latter case, some milling and bedding can rectify the situation. Make sure you pinpoint what the cause is.
