Got a buddy looking for a self timing brake to use occasionally on a Sako S20 .300WM. He’s not planning on using it while hunting, but would like the option when shooting steel. The barrel isn’t terribly heavy, so a really large brake isn’t really desirable. What are the options for slimmer, self timing brakes?

Id pick one that regardless of brand it end's up being Id pick one that was easy to clean , tiny ports are a pain in the but to get brushes inside soaking works , but you might want to look for one that has huge baffles you can get a finger inside of .
Issue with the A419's (for the OP's purposes) is that they only come in one OD.

Yup the PVA Jet4 or Shockwave would work very well. They are also built to send the blast away from shooter so nice to shoot behind also.

2nd for the ACE brake. I run one on my match rifle and it has MUCH less concussion and blow back than the APA, A419, ect brakes. Its much more pleasant for the other shooters as well.

Some of these brakes, while very effective, are extremely obnoxious to be around.
Its only a matter of time before they start reeling it in. Heavy brake use is already being tied to TBI and concussions in some circles. SMU/T1 Trainers are not allowing brakes in classes, military units not allowing them and it will trickle down over time. Getting hit with 100+ blasts to the head in a day is going to have a cumulative effect. I wouldn't be surprised in 5 or 10 years if they are banned from shooting sports and we may see a push towards more cans.
The ACE brake has significantly less concussion to the shooter and anyone to the side of him. Hard to quantify but I am sure it has some % less recoil reduction but its splitting hairs at that point with 25lbs 6mm dashers and BRAs.

Many in our sport are still fairly oblivious to the damage that can be caused by blast concussion.
I'm swapping everything over to suppressors, as they are much, much more pleasant to shoot, and I don't mind the recoil impulse at all. The concussion from brakes fatigues me and wears me out, and I know there's other potential ramifications from that concussion as well, as you point out.
I also find the Insite Heathen has very little concussion to the shooter. Not once have I ever felt it was beating me up after a 2 day match.
Cans would be amazing but some stupid countries *cough* Canada *cough* are too dumb to let their sport shooters own them.
Thanks for the suggestions gents. I agree that lots of brakes are really obnoxious to be around. I have a Little Bastard that absolutely lives up to it's name. To get back to the original question, my buddy bought this S20 as a hunting rifle, and most of the time he won't be running a brake at all. He's just looking for one that he can spin on the odd time when we're out shooting steel or rocks, and he doesn't feel like getting beaten up by the .300. In this case it won't be a comp environment, with lots of folks around, under roofs or other structures that can reflect blast in unpleasant directions. We're just looking for a relatively effective break, that's also not a huge knob out on the end of the rather slim barrel. Unfortunately, we're north of the wall, so suppressors are out.
