I'm hoping to get a dual purpose gun that my son can plink with/learn on and I can shoot rimfire matches with it a few times a year.

-Full size rimfire alternatives are out because the primary role will be for my son to use and practice with. I need a smaller footprint that fits him.
-I had the Crickett CPR, but wasn't impressed with the gun and sold it.
-Must have a threaded muzzle for my sparrow.

I'm leaning towards the CZ457 ProVarmit?

GO...

Maybe the CZ457 Varmint At One instead? The LOP and cheek rest are adjustable which might be important since we are talking about two different shooters using the platform....

I got my son a CZ Scout when he was small. He loves that gun and still shoots it even though it's too small for him.

I think if I had to do it over though, I would have gone with a full size rifle, but dropped it in a chassis so it could grow with him.

What about a T1X MTR and drop it in a chassis?

How old is your Son? Dependent on that and his size either a CZ 457 Scout (LOP=12") or the Pro Varmint (LOP=13.75).

Another possibility is a Tikka T1x dropped in a KRG Bravo (LOP ~ 13" w/o spacers). Take off the buttpad and you're at ~12"

Once they get close to 5ft tall most kids can shoulder a full sized rifle.

I’ve a 452 Scout my oldest used and my younger ones will. With the trigger kit from YoDave it’s impressive. I’ve pics somewhere of pretty impressive groups I shot off bags with a little 4x Leupold. It actually did better than an older 54 and a 452 American. Both of those went to people who really liked them but the scout is going in the ground with me. I used it with my son to run a Trapline as well. It’s definitely a short stock as the kids grow but I’ve seen a few in Klinsky stocks as well.

Mine shot RWS much better than anything else. I’m also not a huge fan of beech stocks but it shoots so I haven’t messed with it. Maybe I’ll track down a full size stock for it to swap in and out.

I too started my kids on the Scout (very nice 1st rifle for a kid). But like you, it was soon outgrown and we looked for something else. We settled on the 10/22. We never did get into matches so, a bolt action wasn't really looked into very deeply.

My son still says his scout is his favorite, since it was his first. And he talks about keeping it forever and handing it down to his kids eventually.

That's great! Did yours come with the single shot sled? Lets face it, it's a great firearm. It's quality and shoots well. There's nothing to hate about it.

10/22 gets my vote and is what I bought my boy. With everything thats available they can make it their own. Make them earn some upgrades or at least make them deserve some upgrades if they show they care, respect and treat the weapon well.
