Recommendation for air pistol

Hi. I don't know if this is the proper place to post, but I saw another airgun question posted in the Rim Fire section recently.

I'm looking for a good target pistol in .177. I prefer a breech action pneumatic (aka "break open" or "barrel action"). I used to have a quality Beeman, but a friend never returned it. It gave consistent 1/8 inch groups at 25 feet. Looked similar to the current Beeman HW70A model.

http://www.beeman.com/hw70.htm

This is solely for target, so I'm looking for good sights and accuracy. I prefer something under $300.

Any recommendations?

Thanks!

Re: Recommendation for air pistol

I've got a Daisy 747 that is really good for the money, it's under $200. Some people complain about the plastic sight, but it does what it's supposed to do. The only thing I complain about is the speed, Mine's running about 325FPS with 7.5 grain pellets. It's not quite enough for smacking starlings right. It pokes holes in paper just fine though.

My dad has a Beeman P3, just over $200, which Beeman claims feels like the Walther P series pistols. It has quite good accuracy as well. It advertises 410FPS, and we can definitely tell a difference between the guns' "bang to smack" time.

Be aware there is a cheap version of the P3 out there that won't be as good, but it's only like 50 bucks or something. Can't remember the brand of that one.

Between the two, I still like mine a little better for the pumping action, it's easier to load pellets into mine, and I don't have to disengage the safety on mine for every shot (his engages automatically when you pump it).

Both are single pump pistols.

If and when I spring for another air pistol, It'll be a Baikal IZH-46M. Looks like they've sprung up to about $500 now, but they're supposed to be very very good.

I don't think you'd go wrong with that beeman though either.

Have fun, I just got done shooting some of the .22 ematch targets at 25 feet in my kitchen with my pistol. The "what bugs me" target is pretty challenging for me.

Re: Recommendation for air pistol

Spring are hard to shoot well.
If you spend the IZH-46, it's 98% the utity on a a $1500 German/Italian gun, it is under $500.

Daisy 147 OK, the Gamo Comp(darn stroke-I mean smaller).

Re: Recommendation for air pistol

I've been shooting the Gamo Compact for years.
Sights and trigger leave a lot to be desired.
Everytime I start having problems with it, I swear that
I'm going to buy a IZH.

Then I remember that I'm a cheap bastard.

I agree with froggy.

Personally I'd rather either get the cheap P3 copy or save up and get the IZH.

The reasoning behind my opinion is that I bought one of the cheapy P3's from wally world as a gift to introduce my step son to handgun shooting and was surprised how well it did for the price. Hitting golf balls at 15-20Y is pretty good for such a cheap gun in my book! FYI,I have 2 Olympic match air pistols so I know what the best are like. Yes there is little comparison but the P3 copy was way better than I had anticipated. The only thing I didn't like about it was it's hard to get a pellet inserted.

I hate how spring pistols are, owned 2-3 of them.

Re: Recommendation for air pistol

I really like the Beeman P1. It has the same grip dimensions of a 1911 which has a lot of advantages if that's what you shoot. I also have the Baikal and it is very nice.

Re: Recommendation for air pistol

If you are looking for match accuracy in a good single stroke pneumatic action, go with the IZH-46M. These are every bit as good as the top end FWB, Hammerli, Steyr, or equal air pistols at a fraction of the price.

I have one and it is silly accurate and probably has the easiest to operate pump stroke.

If you are looking to spend less money, the Daisy 747 is a good gun also. I used one of those when I got into shooting competitive air pistol over 30 years ago and they will shoot. Today though, I would still recommend the IZH-46M.

They can be had through Airguns of Arizona or Pyramid Air. Excellent gun for the money.

Re: Recommendation for air pistol

Another vote for the IZH-46M. Considering the trigger feel, consistency, and accuracy it is capable of it's a bargain compared to its competitors. After a little sanding & refinishing of the grip to fit your hand they're a joy to shoot.

I do suggest keeping a couple of spare breech o-rings on hand just in case.

Re: Recommendation for air pistol

A co-worker bought a Baikal and had just previously purchased a new Browning 800 Mag which he decided to then sell - to me! The Browning appears to be well built and is reasonably priced. It's exteremely accurate but pretty large. It comes standard with fiber optic sights and a cocking assist handle which make it a dream to shoot!
