After getting a Tikka CTR in 6.5 and really enjoying getting back in to rifle shooting my buddy's yearly suggestions to go elk or moose hunting are starting to get in. I feel good with the 6.5 for whitetail deer hunting in Texas, but for Moose or Elk in WA I want a bit more power on it. Are 300 Win Mags close to the 6.5 in repeatable accuracy with factory loads?

I do see a Tikka T3x Lite in 300 Win Mag. I would still have to do research on a chassis for it to fit the action.

I was, and still somewhat am, looking at the Christensen MPR in 6.5 for $2200, but if I'm spending that much I'm also thinking I should consider a bigger cartridge for bigger game hunting.

Wide open to recommendations and suggestions.

Oh, to add another twist, if there are any CF barreled rifles I'd be interested in that too. Guess another option is the Tikka T3x then a Proof barrel on it and in a self-picked stock.

And, to try and find some use for my $100s of Cabela's gift cards, it'd be great if Cabela's sold it :)

I do see a Tikka T3x Lite in 300 Win Mag.

i had a tikka lite in 300 win mag and holy crap did that thing kick like a freakin' mule. i'm no recoil weenie (shoot 7stw and 340wby) but wow did that kick. you won't feel it in the field of course but it won't be fun at the bench.

i am going to use my rem custom shop KS in 7stw for a hopeful elk hunt this fall but am looking in the $2k range for a whitetail rifle prob in 6.5 creed. looking at rem custom shop (700 north america around $1700-2200). montana rifle company has their x2 at $1200-1300 but i haven't handled one yet. legendary arms has their capra. nosler has the 48. cooper has their excalibur around $2k, very nice and accurate rifle, that would definitely be my choice if they made that in lefty. prob is i'm a lefty so options are limited (rem custom and montana x2 do lefty).

yeah, I had a feeling on the light weight rifle = big recoil. I doubt I'd use it at the range near as much as my 6.5.

For weight though, this would be a packing rifle and the Remington 700 MDT is already over 12 lbs without a scope. Likely a bit too much for me. If only the Christensen MPR was offered in a 300WM chambering. I could just go with their Ridgeline but I need to find a place to hold and handle it in person.

I have friends who kill elk every year with a 6.5 Creedmoor. Now, if you're not comfortable with that, a 7mm Rem Mag will kill an elk deader than dead and has a lot less recoil than the 300wm. I have a 7mm Rem Mag in a Tikka T3 Hunter, and it shoots 1/2" groups at 100 and I killed a bull elk at 450 yards this year with it. I shoot the 162gr ELD-X and it works quite well on elky things.

I just ordered a 300 WM havak from cabelas to burn up my cabelas bucks. Hard to do better for the Money IMO. Cabelas specs are wrong, they will be 10 twist with 26" barrel.

You may run into mag length issues with the Tikka and .300WM. A Tikka magnum magazine is only good for 3.360" or so. I have a 7mm RM and that length is not long enough for the bullets I want to use. That would be even worse with .300 WM.

Redsnake Tactical and Tikka Performance now make bottom metal for full length AICS mags that allows a COAL of 3.500+

Funny, I was just looking at that tonight. There is something I like about a CF wrapped barrel but I'm probably too obsessed with that idea.

I'm heading over to Cabela's tomorrow or this weekend to possibly make a decision and get something ordered. I'm considering spending less on the 300WM since it will likely not be for frequent target shooting and would be mostly just for hunting a few times a year. I'm considering getting both the Christensen MPR in 6.5 and a 300WM more in the $1200 range. Hopefully the Cabela's near me will have at least one Havak and one Ridgeline in stock in any caliber so I can get a feel for the actions and check out build quality on both.

All Howa rifles have a sub MOA guarantee. They are very accurate and you can also get barreled actions alone. This will allow you to get whichever stock chassis system you like or want for it.

Thanks for that idea. I had forgotten about Howa being in the running there. I'll check them out if the options at Cabela's don't work out for me. Hard to pass up the savings I have accumulated there.

Also sucks that in WA state all FFLs have to collect sales tax on transfers for out of state purchases. That and paying a $30 transfer fee eliminates a lot of what used to be savings on out of state purchases.

After doing some more reading up on things I branched out to consider the 7MM Mag and the 30-06. Happened to notice that Cabela's has a Christensen Ridgeline 30-06 (only this caliber on sale), a Legendary Arms Pro 7MM Mag or Fierce Fury 7MM Mag all on sale for $1499. I can't find info on whether the Fury's brake is removable and if the barrel is threaded, so I'm likely ruling that out. And after reading more, I think I'd prefer the lighter recoil of the 30-06 and just know I'll have to work to keep shots <200 yards when hunting Elk or Moose. Don't think I can come close to $1500 for doing a custom CF barrel on a Tikka action.

I bought a T3x in 7mm Mag for the purpose of hunting elk out west. It puts the Barnes 145 LRX into sub 0.5” groups and doesn’t punish the shoulder. Highly recommended.

Was it the T3x Lite model?

The Ridgeline that was on sale has now sold out. I'm considering the Fury in 7MM Mag with it's 1/2 MOA guarantee. But their site does not call out if the barrel is threaded for a brake. I do want to use a suppressor on whatever rifle I get. Time to read up some more...

Dang, I just sold a Christensen arms in 26 nosler, it would be great for both elk and moose. But the 300win is the easiest, cheapest, and most perfect round for elk and moose. You can find factory ammo almost anywhere. The other suggestion in a big 7mm. Either 28 nosler Or 7rem or 7 rum, 280ai, 284.

have had a 7stw for years that i've used on whitetail (overkill i know) and planning on using it this fall for my first (hopefully) elk hunt! a Ton of energy out to 400 yards! just bought three boxes of DoubleTap 175gr Nosler Partition that i need to sight in and get dope for. if these aren't a great load for elk please let me know what is. i've just used winchester ballistic silvertips on deer (devastating) but figure something a little tougher and penetrating for elk.

I have a former co-worker that I still keep in touch with who has gotten an Elk every time he goes out and has done so for the last 20 years or so. An old Remington BA, in 25-06 is his gun. He hunts both Oregon and Washington and has never had to trail very often. He hunts for meat, not trophy and could care less about horns. Good shot placement and good stalking skills that lead to that shot placement results in clean kills and not much meat lost on the far side.

Well, since the price was too good to pass up, I had grabbed the Fierce Fury 7mm Mag when it popped up on Cabela's. $1499 before $107 cashback and a 1/2 MOA guarantee was just too good. Need to find a good lightweight scope for it as I think my Viper PST II 5-25 is a bit heavy for that type of rifle. Thinking I may have to go to SFP to get a light weight scope for it.

That Ruger does look like it would have fit my needs pretty well, though it is a bit heavier than the Fierce.
