Gunsmithing Recontour Barrel

I've done some researching and found some say don't do it and some say its okay. Most barrel manufactures will do there own barrels. I have a fairly new cut rifle benchmark varmint contour .810" muzzle and want to turn it down to say a heavy sporter .700-.730" muzzle.

Anyone here every had a barrel recontoured? What was your results? I know I can sell and just get another barrel, but this route will be cheaper for me.

Shouldn't be a problem. If it were a new unused blank then yes, sell and buy another as the cost of recontouring would be higher than the loss on the blank. I've turned a few down and they shot fine, but the process is a pain in the butt.

You might call the maker and let them tell you if it will have any ill affects, or a specific process to follow. They'll give you a price for them to do it.

I agree with Rhys, it is/can be a pain!

I know Lilja will re contour one of their own barrels, did one for me in .17 cal, from Rem varmint down to a #3 sporter

If you have a unchambered blank send it back and pay the money
to have the manufacturer turn it down.

Bartlein has done it for me on their own barrels, and the results were great.

Forgot to mention the barrel has been chambered to 7 saum. I called and left message to Benchmark,also emailed as well. Waiting for reply back. I found most barrel companies will do there own.

Seems like lots of positive feedback after turning down barrel. I found a very good smith that does the work and the price is good. Just waiting back from Benchmark before jumping into this.
