Hi guys , I have the competition 3 die set for my 338 Lapua, the seater plug in the seating die is not built fo rthe VLD profile, it might work on a 300g SMK but it wont work on my 300g Berger hybrids. the nose hits the end of the seater plug.

does redding make a VLD plug in 338 cal for the micrometer head> I dont need a new micrometer just a new plug.

Thanks

P.s. I looked all over their website and google searches...but no go.

Re: Redding 338 VLD seater plug

I went to sinclaire, it the standard plud, not a VLD unfortunately. I looked on Bergers site and they have a story on Redding VLD micrometers and plugs made just for their VLD bullets but Redding only offers the whole Micrometer top,$48. all I want is the to swap the stock plug for the VLD plug.!

I have written Redding but no response yet, How are you guys loading the 300 Grain Breger VLD in redding dies?

here is the Redding write up.

Bullet Seating Micrometers for Standard Redding Rifle Dies
Redding Competition Seating Dies have set the standard for precision and accuracy in the most discriminating handloading circles. Numerous world records and championships are set each season and with these dies.
A new Bullet Seating Micrometer has now been created by Redding for use with all seating dies using 1/2-20 thds.

These new Bullet Seating Micrometers are available for both traditional (STD) bullet shapes as well as the new VLD bullets.
The new Bullet Seating Micrometers are a direct replacement for the original seat plugs and can easily be changed from one die to another.

Re: Redding 338 VLD seater plug

The competition seaters are different than the add on micrometer seaters. They take changeable seating stems and those generally come in standard short, standard long, vld short and vld long. The addon micrometers are for standard non-competition dies and only mae setting seating depth easier. they do not provide any of the other benefits of a competition seater. Call redding and ask for tech support and they will tell you the exact part number you need if they make it.

Having said that I'm getting good results with the seating stem that came in my reddding 338 competition seater.

Re: Redding 338 VLD seater plug

Also, the separate Redding micrometer VLD seaters do not fit the Redding competition dies, the threads are different. At least they are for 223 Rem. 224 caliber VLDs did work fine in the comp. seater though.

Re: Redding 338 VLD seater plug

I purchased the redding VLD seater plug.... I have two sets of redding dies for my 338lm.. one being the Type S match neck die set which comes with a comptetiton micometer seater.. I have loaded the 300 OTM's with no issues on this die.... I also have the Type C redding seater and full length re sizer. The replacement "plug" fits the type "c" but it isn't NOT made for the TYPE S. I too thought i was getting just a PLUG for my comp die set however its the whole micrometer that is sent, plug is made with it. and it wont even come close to fitting the type "s" competition set... Im willing to sell the type C with the VLD plug at a very good price...used once or twice if needed.. Ill just stick with my competition die set..

this is what i purchased

Maybe i was a bit too amateur to be playing with this..but whatever i have no more use for it. If someone knows more about this please feel free to inform me.

Are you loading the 300 Grain Berger .338?

Re: Redding 338 VLD seater plug

If you could please, remove the plug and put a bullet in it by hand, does it wiggle around or is it a snug form fitting fit?

the berger 300 wiggles around like the profile of the stainless plug does not fit the ogive profile . OR the tip is just touching and not allowing the profile of the plug to make contact welll wilth the bullet ogive.

Thanks

Re: Redding 338 VLD seater plug

I am using the Forester Micro seater for my .338, haven't had issues with the berger VLDs yet. But I was loading the first Gen berger hybrids which I think are a bit different than the new ones.

Re: Redding 338 VLD seater plug

I just started loading for my new 338 Norma Mag and I have run into a similar problem with the bullet seating stem.

The tip of the 300 Berger OTM bullets are bottoming out in the stem of my Forester Ultra seater.
I noticed the tip of the bullet was getting slightly flattened and when I checked the run out, it was all over the place, as much as .0020.

I called them this morning and they said just send it in with a couple of bullets and they would take care of it.

I figured I would let them try and fix it before I chucked it up and reached in with a tool and cut it a little deeper.

Re: Redding 338 VLD seater plug

I had to call redding today, I talked to Aj on the tech line and asked him specifically about the vld seater stem for the competition dies. He gave me a part number 557733. I then went to all the vendors, Sinclair, midway, grafs and sons, and Bruno's, Aj told me these are where I should try. No luck. So I called back talked to the lady that answers the phone and asked her if ii could just buy one directly from redding. No problem ,but they don't take credit cards. Send them a check for about 30 bucks and one will be heading your way. The dealers don't have them yet.according to redding. Hope this helps someone.

Re: Redding 338 VLD seater plug

If you call Sinclair or Midway they can generally special order the part from Redding. Same for custom made dies. You'll pay less because Redding has to charge you full list price and you can use a credit card.

Re: Redding 338 VLD seater plug

Here is the other way to get it guys if you don't want to call redding. This is from sinclair.

Your question about: REDDING COMPETITION SEATER PLUG/338 CA has been answered.

On 01/17/2012 you asked the following question at Sinclair International

"Hi, I need to have the Competition plug VLD for my 338 lapua magnum. Im loading the 300 grain Berger VLD Hybrid OTM bullet and need the VLD plug for my micrometer competition bullet seating die. Thanks patrick Hover"

Sinclair International from Montezuma, IA said:

"Patrick, The stem you need is an RD55733. This will be a special order item from us."

Re: Redding 338 VLD seater plug

Yep, that's the one! One would think that for 300$ for the competition dies that redding would offer that as an option or just put in the box!
