Redding Type S bushing die users???

Re: Redding Type S bushing die users???

I use an undersized expander ball. 30 cal = 270 size expaner ball. 6mm = 22 expander ball. With a bushing die the bushing is controling the case neck size. If you use the same caliber expander ball you don't need to use the "S" die. You are negating the main intention of the bushing die to control the neck ID. A well tapered expander ball can still push the brass out round if it has been hit on the case mouth when it was ejected.

Re: Redding Type S bushing die users???

I don't use a expander ball. I use a Lyman M type die on the stage after sizing on my XL650. I think it helps reduce case growth this way. Besides I needed something to take up an extra stage on my press.

Re: Redding Type S bushing die users???

I'm with Victor and 4Rail and ditch the balls uless the mouths are dinged in for some reason. Then it's the carbide expander balls so I can ditch the lube.

I use a bushing .335 bushing when the EB is .336. Others have different experince but that's what I have because it works for me.. </div></div>

+1. No point in using certain bushing size if you use the full size expander ball. I use a .289 bushing for my Rem 260 brass with the undersized non-expander ball with the decapping pin in place. If you have dinged up the mounth of the case, run it up into a full size expander to just "kiss" the expander ball, then neck size it.

Re: Redding Type S bushing die users???

I try not to use the expander ball on my brass due to concerns of overworking the brass and pulling the necks off center.

Last night though, I dropped a piece of brass while prepping it and the case mouth deformed when it hit the hardwood floors. Therefor I put the expander ball back into my bushing die and ran the case through to fix the neck.

Afterwards I measured the resized case neck diameter and compared it to the rest of my brass which hadn't used the expander ball. Sizes were exactly the same, so apparently the expander ball isn't big enough to negate the bushing.
