Reduced capacity .308 brass

Re: Reduced capacity .308 brass

Thanks for the responses.

Have just managed to get hold of some trail boss (very expensive here in UK £23 = $37 for 9oz). Had not appreciated that it would fill that much of a .308 case.

So will save the money that I would have spent on the cases and buy another 9oz

Re: Reduced capacity .308 brass

There's another option you can do. My dad worked this out in a 7.62x54R that he has suppressed for plinking in the back yard.

Get some low round count brass that's been fired 1-2x's, clean it up extra nice and wash it out with acetone. Make sure there's not any carbon in the case body, use a drill and some steel wool to scrub it out. You can also use a dilute solution of Muriatic acid to wash the inside of the cases out as you lightly scrub with a stainless brush.

Take a piece of wood dowel or something that an act as a pintle and insert it into the mouth and down to the flash hole to test fit it. Then remove and coat with a thin film of vaseline.

Mix up a soupy batch of JB Kwik or JB Weld and re-insert the pintle. If any spills out the mouth wait until it starts to set up and cut it loose with a razor blade or something.

When you can wiggle the pintle out is your call, I usually wait until it's about half hard.

Take a drill bit of the appropriate size for the flash hole and back drill it through the fully hard epoxy. THis way you have a clear fire path to the powder column.

You now have reduced capacity cases, you want to neck size only and you can't mix them between rifles.

The other method is the same idea but you use a piece of brass or steel for the pintle. Fill it with cast lead and back drill the hole again.

This method will give you about 8-10 gr of powder capacity with something like Red Dot or Unique. Both are WAY cheaper than Trail Boss.

I will whole heartedly admit, this entire method is time consuming and TB is worth the extra hassle most of the time. Unless, of course, you can't find it.
